I am immensely proud to announce that JAINA and Jain Center of Greater Boston bringing you an International Symposium, Ancient Wisdom Meets the Modern Age, on June 20 -21, 2020 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. We are inviting eminent scholars from all over the world who have conducted original research in studying Jain scriptures. Details given below.

Jain Youth Exchange Program is sending 12 Jain youths to India from North America from December 20, 2019, through January 3, 2020. Application and other details are given below.

Parliament of the World Religions is giving a great opportunity to become its member. Details given below.

SYMPOSIUM ON JAINISM AND MATHEMATICS: ANCIENT WISDOM MEETS THE MODERN AGE

The Federation of Jain Associations in North America (JAINA) and The Jain Center of Greater Boston (JCGB) will hold an International Symposium on ancient Jain Mathematics on June 20 -21, 2020 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston. Symposium title "Ancient Wisdom Meets the Modern Age".

We will invite eminent scholars from all over the world who have conducted original research in studying Jain scriptures, specifically for their mathematical contributions. We also seek papers on newly researched subject matter such as on exchanges among Arabic, Greek, Chinese, and Jain mathematicians; unpublished Jain mathematical texts in Tamil, Kannada, and other Indian languages and their antiquity; Jain numbers theory and its uniqueness; earliest positional notations, Jain concept of infinity and modern infinity; unique and independent contributions of Jain mathematics in the outside world. Please see the list of some suggested topics here. Kindly send your abstract as soon as possible but definitely by 31st December 2019.

The Scientific Organization Committee of this symposium (SOC) will then go through all abstracts received and select several most relevant for presentation in person at the symposium at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT in the USA on 20th and 21st June 2020. All selected original articles will be edited and are likely to be published by a publisher as a monograph.

JAIN YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM (USA TO INDIA)

The Jain Youth Education Program (JYEP) team is back and this time taking 12 young adults, followers of the Jain Way of Life, (ages 18 - 24) from North America to India from December 20, 2019, through January 3, 2020, to Ahmedabad, Pune, and Lonavala.

JYEP offers exposure to different cultures and ranks as one of the most powerful ways to promote both the Indian culture and the Jain way of life. JYEP participants will meet people from other countries and experience new cultures, planting the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding. The program is designed to offer numerous benefits to its young participants and their hosts and mentors, Jain leaders and to the Jain community at large both in North American and India.

To apply for this program, please download the application form from the website www.jaina.org/jyep and submit at jyep@jaina.org.

Costs:

1. JITO (in India) will arrange local transportation, lodging, and boarding in each city. The local host families may sponsor additional events, cultural activities, or programs time permitting.

2. Students from North American will be responsible for all airfare (both international and domestic) health insurance, and additional expenses (for example, souvenirs).

Key Dates:

1. Application deadline: October 31, 2019
2. Selection notification: November 11, 2019
3. Travel to India: December 20, 2019, through January 3, 2020

THEORY OF KARMA SERIES

Prakriti bandh (Nature)

While during Daslakshan Parv, one virtue was observed each day along with puja and Kshamavani Puja was performed on September 14th.

Each karma particle has a capacity to give a specific type of fruit to the soul when it matures. The nature of the fruit that karma will give on maturity is determined to right at the time of bondage of karmas. There are 8 major types and 158 sub-types of the nature of karma. These 158 varieties of karma lead to various types of pleasant and unpleasant experiences and circumstances for the Jiva.

There are eight main types of karma which are categorized into the ‘soul harming’ and ‘soul non-harming’ each divided into four types. The harming karmas known as GHATIYA KARMA directly affect the soul powers by impending its perception, knowledge, energy and also brings about delusion. They are Soul destructive karmas as follows:

  1. Gyanavarniya karma(knowledge-obscuring karma)
  2. Darshanavarniya karma(perception-obscuring karma)
  3. Mohniya karma(deluding karma)
  4. Antray karma(obstacle-creating karma)
JAIN CENTER NEWS

Jain Society of Pittsburgh celebrated Paryushan and Das Lakshana Parv with great enthusiasm.

During Paryushan, daily Asthprakari Puja, Chovihar, Aarti, and Pratikraman were performed. There were two lectures every day by Rupaben Shah Mumbai, India. On the day of Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, Snatra Puja was performed melodiously. Devotees pledged a donation for Jivdaya, Sadhrmik Vatsalya, and Swapna Darshan ghee boli. Sadhramik vatsalya was kept on this auspicious day. Mahavir goodie bags were passed out on the occasion of Nishal Garnu to the students. Samvatsaryi Pratikraman was done with great devotion, about 100 people participated. There was Tapasvi Bahuman and Bhavna after Pratikraman.

On the weekend of August 16-19th 2019, YJP and YJA joined forces to host the first-ever joint West regional retreat in Seattle, WA! This was a historic weekend for both the organizations and they are glad they got to share this with incredible attendees. From the sessions to the food, the memories will last forever and they can’t wait to host more joint events like this in the future!
