King Kirtidhar of Ayodhya was engrossed in observing the colorful artwork made by sun in the sky. An eclipse put an end to that beautiful show.

That got him thinking about how nothing was permanent, not his royal wealth, not his physical health, and not even the power of the sun. Only the soul is eternal and cannot be destroyed. He decided to renounce worldly pleasures and lead the life of a monk.

His wife, Queen Sahdevi, was pregnant and eventually gave birth to a boy named Sukoshal. At a young age Sukoshal bore the responsibility of ruling the kingdom.

One day, the Kirtidhar came back to Ayodhya as a monk. When the queen heard of this, she asked the guards to send him out of the kingdom because she was afraid of the influence the father would have on Sukoshal.

But Sukoshal heard the news that his father was in town. He went to meet him and hear him preach. Sukoshal also decided to become a monk. On getting this news, the Queen was shocked and full of rage and despair. She collapsed and died, and was reborn as a tigress.

The father and son came to Shatrunjay and the tigress followed. The rage from her past life made her attack the son. The father asked the son to stay extremely calm and composed. The son obeyed. He stayed still and calm as the tigress tore apart his body. He died in that state and attained salvation.

The life of human being is much more precious and therefore significant than those of other beings on the earth. One who does not happen to come across its precise value, fails to realize its importance. But he who works it, can properly value it. Life is worth-living. One, who is able to know the secrets of life, never allows himself to be dominated by pessimistic feelings. He is never defeated by such thoughts in life. He seldom feels dejected under all odds.

Man has narrowed down distance by inventing airplanes. He invented means to swim by ships like fish. He also invented, for his recreation etc. Radio, T.V., Tape recorder etc. he also invented so many other things such as Gas, Grinder, and so on. For communication he invented Type writer, Telephone, telex and other things. He made tremendous research. To accelerate his speed in his work he made research in the field of electricity, atomic reactors and solar power system etc.


Jain Center of America’s 2017 Chaitya Paripati was to Jain temples of Albany, Ottawa, Montreal and Boston. JCA did 4 buses for their 200 Sangh members and has amazing weekend full of Bhakti, devotion and seva. JAINA gives anumodna to more such events.





Long ago in the city of Champapuri, there lived a very rich merchant named Kuldharand his wife Kulnanda. The merchant had seven daughters. He named them Kamalashri, Kamlavati, Kamla, Lakshmi, Sarasvati, Jayamati, and Priyakarini. All his daughters were married to rich merchants and were very happy. Kuldhar and his wife Kulnanda gave birth to their eighth daughter, but somehow, they were not happy, at her birth. They did not perform a naming ceremony. The eighth girl was less fortunate. As she grew up, her father did not care to find her a husband. If someone brought this matter to his attention, he would only say that she would be settled as soon as he found the right groom for her. He was not worried about her happiness at all.

One day while Kuldhar was at his work, a strange young man came up to him. The man was dressed poorly, his hair was a mess, and he was covered with lice. The merchant asked him,
"Where are you from?
What are you doing here?"
The young man replied, "My father's name is Nandi and my mother's name is Soma. They are in Koshalpur. My name is Nandan. I went to Chandadesh to look for work. One merchant gave me a job to deliver this letter to a man named Vasantdev who lives in your city."

In an effort to aid the recovery in Houston following Hurricane Harvey, the YJA community came together to support Americares, an organization providing emergency medical relief to victims. Over $1700 was raised for medical supplies and medications. Thanks to everyone who donated !

    For Ragda

  • 200 grams dry white peas
  • 200 grams tomatoes
  • 1/2-tsp. Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp. Garam masala
  • 2-tsp. Red chili powder
  • 2-tsp. - green chili paste
  • 2 tbsp. Oil
  • Salt
Soak dry peas in water for 8-10 hours. Wash and boil in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles. Mix salt before boiling.

Chop tomatoes and mix in the mixture to pulp.

Heat oil in a pot. Saute green chilli paste. After 2 minutes add tomato pulp, salt, turmeric powder, garam masala and red chili powder. Boil for some time and then add boiled peas and boil for 5 minutes.

For the pattice
  • 300 grams green peas
  • 2-tsp.-green chili paste
  • 6 slice bread
  • 1 tsp. mango powder
  • 1-cup cilantro leaves
  • 1/2-tsp. Sugar
  • Salt for taste
  • Oil for roasting
Boil peas in a pressure cooker. Mash them. Add squeezed bread, paste, mango powder, cilantro leaves, sugar and salt. Mix well. Make patties. Roast on a griddle till brown on both the sides by adding a little oil.

For the topping
  • chutney
  • Mint cilantro chutney
  • Tamarind-date chutney
  • 1/2-cup cilantro leaves.
  1. Arrange patties in a plate. Pour ragda. Spread chutney, mint cilantro chutney and tamarind- date chutney.
  2. Sprinkle some chopped and cilantro leaves.
