Jai Jinendra!

Today is the ninth day of Das Lakshana Parva which is known for Uttam Aakinchay i.e. Non-Attachment from all worldly pleasures and attachment towards our soul.

Warm Regards,
Gunvant Shah
JAINA President

He, who abandons the evil thought of attachment to worldly objects, can alone give up possessions. Non-attachment means to put a limit to ambitions, to put a check on desires.

As soon as the hopes or ambitions of a man are fulfilled, instantly new ambitions take birth. His desires go on increasing; there is no full stop to them. Therefore, a man should observe the virtue of non-attachment by putting a limit to his ambitions.

To give up the belief that this thing belongs to me is the virtue of non-attachment.

There was a forest. Daily some cowherds led the cows to graze in that pastureland. While grazing the cows one-day, they chanced to see ripe mangoes hanging from a tree. Their mouths watered on seeing the mangoes. When one of the cowherds cast a pebble at the mangoes, two mangoes fell down. He ate them and enjoyed the delicious fruits. The mangoes were really very sweet. This made another cowherd think - "Why to miss such tasty fruits? I shall also pluck a mango just now." So saying he picked up a pebble and struck at the mangoes. Instead, the stone piece struck the head of a saint meditating under the tree. His head was injured and started bleeding. This horrible sight terrified all the cowherds. Seeing tears flowing from the eyes of the saint, the cowherds approached him and spoke humbly - "O saint! We are guilty. You are all merciful. Please pardon us. We have inflicted severe injury and pain to you." The saint replied calmly, "I have suffered no pain." The cowherds again questioned, "if you have felt no pain, why tears are bursting from your eyes?" At this the saint replied, "Boys! When you cast pebbles at the mango tree, it gave you sweet and tasty mangoes. But now when your stone piece struck me, I have nothing to give you in return. That is why tears are flowing from my eyes." The cowherds paid homage to the saint lying at his feet and returned home. The instant that the feeling of compassion grows in human heart, is the beginning of religion.

Oh my God! That patient suffers from a killer disease. The ailment has reached the stage of no cure. Doctors have given up hope. The patient feels rejected and dejected realizing the certainty of death.

He, with all hopes given up, takes shelter in your lotus feet. He cleanness them by pious wash and sprinkles the holy showering of dust of your feet on his body.

And look at the miracle! The holy wash work out to be the ointment and elixir. His ailments parish. He acquires excellent health and perfect physique like Kamadeva.

My God! This body is a home of ailments; and so, the disease will take place and will be cleansed, but the real ailment of humankind is greediness. Everyone runs behind wealth of no avail.

God, grant me the freedom from unwanted attirements and clean my soul of all attachments. I wish and aspire that my soul becomes free from all the ailments. This is the cardinal of my life.

Oh Lord Adidev! Your Bhakta is handcuffed and tied by chains. These chains are not just one or two; but they are covering the whole body from top to toe. Even the thighs are scratched due to friction.

In spite of this, the Bhakta feels happy and gay. Somebody feels that He cleans other mantra. But I know that he recites Your name only – Adideva, Rishabhadeva… Arihanta… Trithankara… Uninterrupted and unabated mantras go on and on… To a great surprise, the bondages fall away. Bhakta says that the chains have tied me, but I am free because of my God’s dignity.

Oh my Lord! You have freed several Bhaktas from such iron chains. Your hymns have cut off the bondages automatically. Lord, kindly save me also from the bondages of attachment, emotion and love, agony ecstasy and intoxication. Lot of people, including great monks also, are bound by such afflictions. God, grant me the due freedom. Please take care of me so that I am not trapped. I am a free bird of the sky of salvation.

As we know Hurricane Florence is pummeling the Carolinas with strong winds, heavy rain, and dangerous tidal surges. Florence is inundating communities and leaving over one million are without power. The storm surge has been as high as 11 feet, combining with as much as 50 inches of rain to produce catastrophic flooding. Compounding these challenges, Florence is moving very slowly with 90 mph winds and heavy rain. The storm will affect coastal North Carolina and South Carolina.

The rain has paralyzed infrastructure. Chances are high that every one of us has family and friends who have been impacted. Our prayers are needed for all their safety and welfare, no doubt, but there is an even greater need to help.

JAINA World Community Service (WCS) is launching a fundraising drive for the victims of this unfathomable tragedy and ask the Jains of North America to contribute.
