In Jainism, a Jiva is an individual soul embodied in the body of a living being or an object such as a piece of wood or glass of water. In both cases, the soul is bound to matter and subject to change, duality, karma, and rebirth. In its original and purest state, an individual soul is eternal and filled with bliss consciousness. In its bound state, it is subject to the impurities of gunas, suffering, and delusion

While in Jainism the words Jiva and souls are used interchangeably, in the case of Hinduism a clear distinction exists between the two. Literally speaking, in Hinduism a jiva means a living being or an embodied Self having a soul inside the body and bound to Nature and its modification. It is pure and eternal even in its bound state and subject to no modifications. In other words, bondage is for the Self but suffering is for the being.

Attachment binds the soul (with Karmas); a soul, which is free from attachments, becomes liberated from Karmas. Know that this surely is briefly (the nature of) the Karmic bondage of souls.

Last weekend, 92 young Jains from across the Mid-Atlantic Region met in Scranton, PA for annual YJA Poconos Retreat. The Mid-Atlantic retreat will, once again, go down as the largest retreat YJA has ever hosted!!

From thought-provoking sessions about Jainism and environment to an exciting bhangra workshop led by P&P Dance Crew to adventures on the slopes and even the numerous games of psychiatrists, mafia, and codenames during the all-nighter, YJA left the weekend with many new memories and an even bigger family! The slopes may have been cold, but it left the hearts feeling warm.
