Jain Society of Houston (JSH)

The Jain Society of Houston offers a variety of services to the Houston area Jain community. These include, but are not limited to, an annual calendar, pathshala classes, language classes and a Jain Fellowship.

Recent Temple Activities

On December 21, 2019, Jain Fellowship Houston (JFH) and Young Jains of America (YJA) held its annual Winter Social gathering which included a night of fun games, exchanging of gifts, and great food! In addition to social events, JFH also gives back to the community through bake sales, volunteering at the Houston Food Bank, temple clean-ups, and volunteering at the Houston Children’s Museum.

On January 27, 2019, the Jain Society of Houston held its annual Presidents' Day Celebration, an event commemorating the work and legacy of the current and past JSH Presidents, followed by a look into the future of the Sangh.

On January 5, 2019, the Jain Fellowship of Houston (JFH) held a cleanup event at the Jain Society of Houston to clean the derasar. In the spirit of community service, Jain youth came together to clean rooms, wash equipment, and vacuum. Members received 3 points for participating in the event and additional points for bringing supplies.

On December 23, 2018, the Shah and Gandhi families from Jain Society of Houston hosted a yearly food drive as a family tradition to provide meals for the less fortunate. In the spirit of community service, family and friends came together and packaged meals, water bottle cases, blankets, and clothing. In the words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.”

On November 4, 2018, the Jain Society of Houston (JSH) held its annual Diwali program, a festive holiday filled with dance and musical programs, speeches, and vegetarian food.

On November 21, 2018, Jain Fellowship Houston (JFH) participated in its annual community service event at the Houston Food Bank. This event was a fantastic opportunity for Jain youth to give back to the community during the Thanksgiving Break, develop leadership skills, and build long-lasting friendships. JAINA appreciates and gives anumodana to JFH.

On Nov 21, the Jain Fellowship Houston (JFH) Youth Group hosted a volunteering event at the Houston Food Bank. It provided a great opportunity for children to give back to the community during Thanksgiving Break, develop leadership skills, and earn 4 JFH points to become an officer next year.

Every month, the Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston hosts a unique opportunity to learn about a new faith; this month it was Jainism. On October 20, 2018, Young Jain Professionals (YJP) and the Jain Society of Houston hosted the Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston in a unique interfaith opportunity to discuss Jainism in North America.

On October 14, 2018, YJP Houston and the Jain Society of Houston (JSH) participated in the annual 5K Walk for Animals, a community event to show solidarity with animal rights and other causes which promote Ahimsa. The walk was part of the Mahatma Gandhi Library of Houston's "1000 Lights for Peace" program, and participants enjoyed live Punjabi music, vegetarian snacks, and mesmerizing scenic views within Hermann Park.

Paryushan and Das Lakshan Parva were celebrated with great enthusiasm and great devotion at Jain Society of Houston (JSOH), Texas. They invited Dr. Tej Shahebji, a great scholar and speaker from India, for Paryushan. Great number of members attended his lectures every morning and evening. He also conducted Navkar Mantra Jaap one day and other day he guided Bhakti Jaap of Gautam Swami. JSOH celebrated Das Lakshan Parva with Abhisheks, Pujas, special programs on Self Confidence & Positive Thinking and Das Lakshan Professional & Spiritual workshop. After Paryushan and Das Lakshan, Houston Sangh celebrated Tapasvi Bahman, Swamivatsalya and Bhavna Utsav with great spirit.

On September 9, 2018, the Jain Society of Houston held its annual Sapna Boli event, a tradition highlighting the auspicious dreams of Queen Trishla foreshadowing the birth of Lord Mahavir Swami. Jain center thank all of their volunteers, attendees, and donors for bringing this event to fruition.

The Palitana, Sharunjay Tirth, is the most sacred Tirth for Jains. The Shatrunjay hill has over 3000 small/big temples and 27000 idols, making it the world’s largest temple complex. Every devout Jain aspires to climb to the top of the mountain at least once in his lifetime because of its holiness. On Kartik Poonam, devotees, in very large numbers climb the hills as it opens after four months of closure during the monsoon season.

Jain Society of Houston was transformed into the sacred hills of Shatrunjay on November 4th, Kartik Poonam. Yatris walked through the Moksha dwar towards Jay Taleti and then to Babu nu derasar and other big/small temples of the tirth. They entered through the Ram Pol, Haathi Pol and into Dada no Darbar. Doli walas, phool walis and pooja passes were available to complete the jatra. Yatris ended their jatra by eating Sev-Bhoondi and Bhel at the Bhata Ghar. Over 400 yatris did Bhav Yatra of Shatrunjay Maha Tirth!! The event was inspired by Shri Hiteshbhai Doshi.

Recently, Jain Society of Houston celebrated India's republic day on January 22, 2017. Kids sang Nanha Munna Rahi, performed patriotic dance and shadow play on Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyara Hai. Event was followed by lunch.
