1. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Jai Jinendra!

As they say, all good things too come to an end. This is my last weekly newsletter as JAINA President with completion of the 2017-2019 term. Time flew by fast and last two years are now tagged as beautiful memories. The overwhelming response from our community was very encouraging. When I look back, I feel satisfied that my vision and goals for JAINA’s growth, set at the beginning of my term, have been fulfilled over the last 2 years - thanks to the great support I received from you.

JAINA has been very close to my heart and I feel I have always given my best to JAINA. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you. I received innumerable feedback from the members of the community and they have always been my source of inspiration, encouragement, and improvement.

I thank my entire EC team for working with me over the last two years. JAINA Board of Directors, who are spread out all over USA and Canada, have always responded positively and supported JAINA to reach new heights. JAINA Committee Chairs really make me proud as each Chair has reached a landmark in his/her field. All the collective efforts together have helped JAINA reach its pinnacle. Hats off to Committee Chairs for your dedication and commitment to JAINA. Past Presidents have been like guardians of the organization and I was blessed to have their guidance and support in all my endeavors.

Last but not the least, let me thank my wonderful wife Sulochana Shah and my family, for their unconditional love and support. Without their support, I would not have accomplished as much as I did during the last two years as your JAINA President.

Warm Regards,
Gunvant Shah
JAINA President

2. BEST WISHES FROM THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA - NARENDRA MODI FOR JAINA CONVENTION 2019

It is heart-warming to learn that the 20th Biennial Jain Convention is being held in Ontario, California, from July 4-7, 2019 and a souvenir is being published to commemorate the occasion.

Jainism is rooted in the concepts of ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violence), ‘Anekantvad’ (multi-sidedness) and ‘Aparigraha’ (non-possession). It emphasizes practicing Ahimsa in everyday life in words and deeds. Lord Mahavira delivered the message of protection of the smallest species of the universe through non-violence. In today’s world, ‘Aparigraha’ is a must to usher in peace and harmony by moving away from innumerable desires. These concepts hold added significance and relevance for today’s society.

The life, teachings, and thoughts of Lord Mahavira can act as a beacon not only for our nation but for the entire humanity across the world. I'm sure that the participants at the convention will imbibe the message of compassion and equality propounded in Jainism.

My best wishes for the all-around success of the 20th Biennial Jain Convention. May the souvenir propagate and popularize these messages for the Jain community and the Indian diaspora.”

3. JANISIM SAYS…

Question: Dairy products are not a Vegetarian product (it is an animal product) so why do Jains consume them?
Should they consume them?
Why is eating of dairy product not prohibited in the Jain scriptures?

Answer: First, let’s talk about the question of why dairy products are not prohibited in Jainism:
Jainism is an introspective religion and there are no “thou shalt” commandments in Jainism. Jainism provides a set of values/principles and guidelines on how we can apply them in our day-to-day life. It is up to each one of us to understand and internalize these values/principles and apply them mindfully in various aspects of our lives like how to consume and preserve natural resources, how to follow right ethics, what we should eat/not eat, wear/not wear, integrity with work and finance, etc…

4. JAINA WEBINAR: ACHARYA DR. LOKESH MUNI ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND BHAGWAN MAHAVIR'S PHILOSOPHY

On June 22, 2019, Acharya Dr. Lokesh Muni talked about the Environment and Bhagwan Mahavir’s Philosophy during a JAINA webinar.

He talked about how human greed is constantly harming the precious environment. Development is not bad, unending greed in the name of development is. He even explained how Bhagwan Mahavir was not against the development, but at the same time, Bhagwan had said that the resources on Earth are limited while our wants are unlimited. The earth could fulfill our need/necessity but not our greed. It is not capable of providing unlimited resources to meet our unending desires/wants. Further he explained to people that we might not be able to cut down the consumption to zero, but at least we can minimize the consumption of plastics, minimize cutting down on trees, and create minimum pollution in the environment and learn to respect the existence of other living beings as much as we value ourselves. Being vegetarian is not just beneficial to the environment, but to our body as well. Later, Dr. Lokesh Muni answered questions from the webinar attendees. The webinar was very well received.
