JAINA Celebrates Diwali on Capitol Hill
|
|
|
With a soothing recitation of Namokar Mantra, on November 16th, 2022, JAINA co-hosted the Diwali celebration on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC along with BAPS, HAF, and AAHOA. DC dignitaries, Senators, Congressmen, and Congresswomen braved the cold weather to come to celebrate Diwali with, and light diyas alongside the Indian community, namely JAINA President, Mr. Haresh Shah. JAINA Public Relations and Media Chair, Mrs. Savita Jain, recited Namokar Mantra and introduced Senator Chris Van Hollen. This was the first time that the Namokar Mantra was recited live at a Diwali program on Capitol Hill and a Diya was lit by a JAINA President. The event was very well attended with over 400 attendees from the Indian diaspora, members of the House and Senate, and the Indian Ambassador to the USA, Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
The event brought to light the strides that the Jains and Indian American community has made in the American political spectrum and marks their rising participation and representation in the policy-making process of this nation. The event concluded with a scrumptious vegetarian dinner from BAPS.
Please watch the video of Navkar Mantra and Diya Lighting by Haresh Bhai.

The Land of Ahimsa - Vegan Documentary
Watch this recently released documentary on Veganism, The Land of Ahimsa, which aims to restore the meaning of ahimsa – respect and non-violence towards all living beings – across India. The documentary looks closely at the meaning of the word. Ahimsa is inspired by the notion that all living beings share a spiritual energy. And therefore, to harm another is to harm oneself.
Teaming up with director Aryeman Ramsay, The Land of Ahimsa sees Dolly Vyas-Ahuja journeying across India and the US. There, she speaks to physicians, environmentalists, philanthropists, and experts in nutrition, spirituality, and advocacy about the importance of ahimsa and its role in modern-day India.

Transformation begins with Gratitude
by Sanjay Bhandari
During the past couple of years, all of us have experienced the mental, emotional, and psychological challenges of the pandemic. Many of us have realized the importance of support from family and friends during these challenging times. Among all the worries there is also a feeling of gratefulness for the love and support we have received from many. And that feeling of gratitude changes our perspective. It transforms our minds from a state of despair to a state of hope and appreciation.
In this article, Sanjay Bhandari explores what gratitude is, why the attitude of gratitude is important and how it can transform our lives. He also lists sixteen simple ways to practice gratitude. We hope it helps uplift your spirits. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Hot Meals Drive 2022
|
|
|
We are less than a week away from Thanksgiving Day - November 24, 2022. Last year, we served 6,815 meals on Thanksgiving Day. This year we aim to outdo ourselves with your support in feeding hungry people and saving Turkeys from getting slaughtered. Are you with us on this? Here’s how you, as a Jain Center or an Individual, can help reduce the suffering of millions of turkeys and feed hungry people.
This year we need your help to feed even more people. Here’s how you can help reduce pain and suffering:
- Organize a cookout at the Jain Center: Utilize your local Jain center’s kitchen to cook meals on Thanksgiving. This one may sound daunting and a gargantuan effort. I thought so too when we first started, but it really isn’t! The JOSF team has the tools, system and recipe to help you through this process.
Click here to commit to feeding people.
-
Organize a cookout in your garage or backyard: If you feel more comfortable cooking meals at home, which can serve as a great option as well. The meals can be as simple as garbanzo or kidney beans and rice.
Click here to commit to feeding people from your home.
- Donate money to feed people: JAINA has received a pledge to feed 5,000 people in Southern California. The meals would feed people in a vast area covering Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, and San Diego. Each Thanksgiving meal costs $2.50 so your $25 donation would feed 10 hungry people. We would love your support to continue this work.
Donate at $2.50 for a meal
The meals can be vegetarian, plant-based, Jain, or all of the above. JOSF can provide recipes to make 100 meals of chole and rice, rajma and rice, and red pasta with vegetables, which cost $2.50. Take your pick, you can’t go wrong because they all taste amazing!
Many of us are fortunate to have a roof over our heads, warmth on our bodies, and food on our plates. There are more than half a million people around the US who don’t have these basic necessities. We can all do a little bit to help ease their hunger and bring a smile to their faces with a meal!
Let’s Feed Hungry Together!
Donate at $2.50 for a meal
