JAINA Extends Condolences on the Passing of Shri Devendra Peer

JAINA is saddened to know the Arihant Sharan of Shri Devendrabhai Tokarshi Peer on July 22, 2022, and extends heartfelt condolences to his family and the Jain community for his loss. He was 79 years old, and is survived by his wife Dr. Meeta (Kunda) Peer. JAINA apologizes for sharing our condolences late and is extremely grateful for the selfless work of Shri Devendra Peer towards JAINA and humanity.

Shri Devendra Peer served as the President of Samarpan Jain Sangh Philadelphia, from 1993 till his last breath, with the help of the dedicated and hard-working JAINA and Hindu community. He had done various community services in the Philadelphia area and was a pioneer leader in bringing Mahavirswami Pratimaji to Samarpan temple in the Philadelphia region. JAINA Convention 1999 in Philadelphia was hosted by Mr. Devendra Peer as a Convenor. He did not just work for JAINA or Jain community, but for humanity and worked for WHO, Lata Mangeshkar Hospital, and many international projects. Nimo Patel – Planting the Seeds of Inspiration - Complied by Dilip Parekh

This is the story of Nimesh Patel, better known as "Nimo" to friends and fans. A former MTV-featured rap star, Ivy League graduate, and owner of a worldwide media production studio, Nimo now joyfully serves the poorest children in the slums of Ahmedabad, India, through an NGO "Manav Sadhna". Not only does he act from love but inspires others to be kind, spread love and live from a space of gratitude through his music.

Nimo likes to share a quote from Mahatma Gandhi, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”Nimo says that this quote really helped him. “I had felt lost in my own way because my heart was not connecting with the external elements of my life. So, basically, the next phase of the journey of my life became: What does it mean to serve? Not merely because I want to help others, but because I really need to understand myself. If service is the best medium to find myself, then what a win-win!”

Thanksgiving Hot Meals Drive 2022

Last year, we had a great response to Thanksgiving Meal Drive where we fed 100,000 people throughout the world between Ahimsa Day (10/2) and Thanksgiving Day. Out of which, 25,000 meals were served in Los Angeles and 6,815 meals were served on Thanksgiving Day This year we need your help to feed even more people. Are you with us on this? Here’s how you, as a Jain Center or an Individual, can help reduce the suffering of millions of turkeys and feed hungry people.

This year we need your help to feed even more people. Here’s how you can help reduce pain and suffering:

  1. Organize a cookout at the Jain Center: Utilize your local Jain center’s kitchen to cook meals on Thanksgiving. This one may sound daunting and a gargantuan effort. I thought so too when we first started, but it really isn’t! The JOSF team has the tools, system and recipe to help you through this process. Click here to commit to feeding people.
  2. Organize a cookout in your garage or backyard: If you feel more comfortable cooking meals at home, that can serve as a great option as well. The meals can be as simple as garbanzo or kidney beans and rice. Click here to commit to feeding people from your home.
  3. Donate money to feed people: JAINA has received a pledge to feed 5,000 people in Southern California. The meals would feed people in a vast area covering Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside and San Diego. Each Thanksgiving meal costs $2.50 so your $25 donation would feed 10 hungry people. We would love your support to continue this work.

Donate at $2.50 for a meal

The meals can be vegetarian, plant-based, Jain, or all of the above. JOSF can provide recipes to make 100 meals of chole and rice, rajma and rice, and red pasta with vegetables, which cost $2.50. Take your pick, you can’t go wrong because they all taste amazing!

Many of us are fortunate to have a roof over our heads, warmth on our bodies, and food on our plates. There are more than half a million people around the US who don’t have these basic necessities. We can all do a little bit to help ease their hunger and bring a smile to their faces with a meal!

Let’s Feed the Hungry together!

Donate at $2.50 for a meal

Jain Society of Oregon & SW Washington

Jain Society of Oregon & SW Washington (JSOSW) is a 501(c)(3) and has been established since the 80s. It has been serving the greater Portland metro and the surrounding area. We are a non-profit religious organization with the goal of practicing, preserving, and promoting the Jain religion. We have about 60+ registered families and are projected to grow to 100+ families by 2028. Over the last many years, JSOSW has been hosting monthly meetings, and dignitaries, and celebrating religious events like Paryushan, Mahavir Janm Kaylank, Sangh yatra, and other activities. They have a very active pathshala which has about 35 kids right now from ages 5 to adults.

With the community growing, JSOSW thought this was the right time to build a Center where we can all come together as a community. With that in mind, the center recently purchased a 3,000 sq. ft. property for their Jain Center for $825k. Since the start of the project last year we have raised $375k and have committed an additional $300k in the next 5 years from our community for the cause. Please find more information about our center at https://www.jsosw.org/jain-center

JSOSW would appreciate any help that will take us closer to our goal of paying off our loan.
