Peer Talks is Peer Syed Mudassir Shah’s podcast, where he talks with intellectuals, scholars, diplomats, and global leaders about Sufism, International Relations, Diversity, Inclusion, Peace, and Harmony. Dr. Nirmal Baid has been associated with the Jain Center of Northern California for over 25 years holding many EC and BOD Committee roles. International Symposium on the Dating of Nirvan of Mahavirswami

JAINA Academic Liaison Committee along with International School of Jain Studies, Jain Center of Greater Boston, and Sir John Templeton Foundation have co-organized an International Symposium on the ‘Dating of Nirvan of Mahavirswami’ on July 9 & 10, 2022 at the Veerayatan Pune, India.

You may have noticed that the nirvan year of Mahavirswami in many history books and papers has a wide range, such as 467 BC, 477 BC, 484 BC, 490 BC, 498 BC, 545 BC, and so on. Many authors have written scholarly books on this subject. Fortunately, all Jain sects and their scriptures accept 527 BC as the nirvan year. As a result, Jain monks and Jain scholars did not see a need to present all the facts supporting the year 527 BC to the outside world as it did not have any direct bearing on Jain philosophy. Even so, there are even some Jain scholars who dispute 527 BC as the nirvan year based on their extensive research. The nirvan year of Buddha is even more controversial. Different Buddhist scriptures in different countries and sects have different nirvan years.

In order to address this issue, a German scholar, Prof. Heinz Bechert, organized an International Symposium in 1988 where over 100 scholars from 15 countries presented their extensive research on the Nirvan year of Buddha. We are hoping that this symposium will achieve similar results. We believe that this is the time to let Indian and world historians learn the critical and historical facts the ancient Jain scriptures and documents can reveal. Please find more details on the Symposium.
