Mahavir Janma Kalyank
|
On the 13th day of the bright half of the month of chaitra, in the year 543 before the Vikram Era (599 B.C.) the overjoyed royal family was blessed with the birth of one of the greatest propagators of the Jain tradition. His birth took place in the region known as Kshatriyakund in present day Bihar. The child was named Vardhamana, the ever-growing one, because from the day He was conceived, the wealth, power, prosperity and glory of the royal family and all the subjects grew in leaps and bounds.
An extraordinary physical prowess, an attractive appearance and a heart full of kindness were some of the special traits that Prince Vardhamana effortlessly exhibited from his early childhood. His exemplary courage and fearlessness earned Him the title of Mahavira – the courageous one. Respecting the desire of His parents, He married princess Yashoda, and they had a daughter named Priyadarshana. Though He remained a householder for the first 30 years of His life, living in the luxury of a palace, inwardly He was always drawn towards spirituality. His mind was always focused towards renunciation.

Jainism, Relativism and The Moral Imperative of Ahimsa
|
Jain Vishva Bharti London, Jain World Peace Center brings you a lecture on “Jainism, Relativism, and the Moral Imperative of Ahimsa” by Prof. Gary Francione
on Sunday, May 30, 2021. The Professor will discuss Anekantvada explain how often it is applied to moral issues with the result that Jainism may be seen as embracing
moral relativism. He will argue that this is not right and that we must confine Anekantvada to ontological issues, or issues of existence, and not apply it to moral
issues.
All moral issues are guided by one and only principle: Ahimsa. He will use Veganism as an example & explain how Anekantvada cannot be used to justify
non-veganism.

The True Meaning of Ahimsa
|
Ahimsa is widely understood as ‘not harming or hurting others.’ But is this its complete meaning? Gurudevshri Rakeshbhai offers an invaluable insight into the true essence
of ahimsa.
Bhagwan Mahavira expounded ahimsa as the ultimate dharma. One may question why the negative word ahimsa meaning non-violence was used. Should religion
not denote something positive? In truth, though non-violence sounds negative, it is an extremely positive state. It is the state of absolute and complete love – and
what can be more positive than love itself?

Jain Tattvas and Philosophy of Karma Part III
|
Currently, we are learning about the 9 Tattvas under the Jain tattvas and Philosophy of Karma. Last week we learned two tattvas, Asrava and Bandha. Today, let’s understand the 4 types of Bandha in detail.
Prakriti Bandha (Type of karma):
When karmic matter attaches to the soul, it will obscure the soul's essential nature of; perfect knowledge, perfect vision, bliss, perfect power, eternal
existence, non-corporeal, and equanimity. The different types of karma obscure different qualities or attributes of the soul. This is known as Prakriti bandha.
Prakriti bandha is classified into eight categories, according to the particular attribute of the soul that it obscures.

Appeal to all Jains not to use Leather products
|
Real leather is the skin of the animals and they (animals) are the only source for real leather. Humans are the only species that use the skin of another animal. No
animal uses other animals’ skin.
Today, humans use leather for all kinds of footwear, wallets, purses, trouser belts, camera and computer cases, briefcases, suitcases, shoes, jackets
and coats, headgear and head coverings, furnishings (seats in vehicles and in-home furnishings), home decorations (including paintings and many other items).
