Am I Truly Practicing Religion?
|
 Have you
ever questioned if your religious practices are bearing fruit? In spite of performing various rituals, something is missing. Gurudevshri Rakeshbhai elucidates how we often miss out
on the most important part of religion – its essence.
The Enlightened Ones espouse that religion is the practice of experiencing true happiness. It is connecting oneself to the peaceful, blissful Soul. Disinterest in worldliness
is its natural outcome. The life of one who does not make any effort to attain real joy but only emulates this disinterest becomes dull. It lacks the freshness of a flower; there
is no melody, no poetry, no dance, and no fragrance. Without experiencing the bliss of the Soul, there cannot be true detachment towards the world. This is why the Wise speak of revering
bliss. Any path devoid of this is only a way to suffering.
In the name of pursuing bliss, what is practiced is the opposite. You consider religion as going after the opposite of what you earlier understood as the means to attain
happiness. You decide that you will not do certain things, but this decision of ‘not doing’ feels burdensome because it does not stem from complete understanding and readiness. The
things that are given up become more significant. Though you stay away from sensual objects, you still remain entrapped in slavery to sensual pleasures, because your belief regarding
happiness has not changed. Realize that you cannot take even a step towards freedom from sorrow unless you have given up the idea of happiness in material objects.

Maskhaman: A Beautiful Journey
For most of us the word “Maskhaman” – 30 days of Upavas - means an arduous, agonizing task. How can someone call it a “Beautiful Journey”? But that is what one of our
community members experienced. After completing the Tapasya in 2020, this seeker, who wants to stay anonymous, shared with us his journey.
When asked about how did he decide to do this; he said “I had not planned it. It started spontaneously on one early morning with no clue on the night before that such
a journey would be embarked upon. There was no numeric goal in mind, no desire or goals of fame, body weight loss, testing will power, thrill of overcoming a challenge, etc. It was
purely led by curiosity, complete surrender, and a never before incremental experience. The journey kept building one hour and one day at a time based on an inner divine calling without
any destination in mind.”

Jain Reality or Existence
|
Jain Philosophy does not give credence to the theory that God is a creator, survivor, or destroyer of the universe. On the contrary, it asserts that the universe has always existed and will always exist in exact adherence to the laws of the cosmos. There
is nothing but infinity both in the past and in the future.
The world of reality or universe consists of two classes of objects:
- Living beings - conscious, soul, chetan, or jiva
- Non-living objects - unconscious, achetan, or ajiva
Non-living objects are further classified into five categories; Matter (Pudgal), Space (Akas), Medium of motion (Dharmastikay), Medium of rest (Adharmastikay), Time (Kal or Samay).
The five non-living entities together with the living being, totaling six are aspects of reality in Jainism. They are known as six universal entities, or substances,
or realities.
