Jain Digest February 2023

Kshullak Ganesh Prasad Varni by Dr. Prakash C. Jain

Ganesh Prasad Varni, fondly known as “Mahatma Gandhi of the Bundelkhand” for his uncanny resemblance in appearance to Mahatma Gandhi and his selfless service to the community, devoted his life to bringing about an educational and social renaissance in the Jain community of the Bundelkhand region. Born in 1874 in a Hindu family, he voluntarily converted to Jainism early in his youth as he aspired to learn, practice and preach Jainism.

In this article, Dr. Jain provides us with a detailed account of his accomplishments and service to the Jain community. In summary, Dr. Jain says, “Ganesh Prasad Varni’s life offers a fascinating journey of a lifelong learner, a student, a scholar, an author, a social and educational reformer, an activist, a volunteer and a leader, a spiritual seeker, and practitioner of the Jain ethical principles.”

JAINA Tree Planting initiative

In observance of Gurudev Shri Chitrabhanuji’s 100th birth anniversary, JAINA has sponsored the construction of a new Panjaraople just outside Shankheshwar in Panchasara town. The boundary wall and the gates of the Panjarapole have already been erected. The panjarapole is about 8 km from the Shankheshwar Temple on the Shankheshwar- Ahmedabad highway. JAINA President Hareshbhai Shah performed a groundbreaking ceremony of Shri Chitrabhanuji Pinjrapole in Shankheshwar on January 24 in the presence of Panditji Shri Jitendra B. Shah. This section of the highway is arid, with very few trees around. Thousands of our Sadhus in vihar to or from Shankheshwar endure this harsh environment.

The Vaiyavach Committee of JAINA is sponsoring the planting of two thousand trees on both sides of this section of the highway. JAINA has contracted with Sadbhaawna Trust of Rajkot, which has already planted two million trees. The trees they plant have a life expectancy of 200 to 500 years. The trust starts with planting ten feet baby plants purchased from nurseries, planting them on designated routes, placing an eight feet high wire cage, nurturing it with water and fertilizers as needed for three years, and maintaining a registry. These trees provide shelter and food for birds, cool the region, act as an oxygen factory, attract rain, and provide shade for pedestrians and our Sadhu Sadhvis as they travel this route.

On February 5, the JAINA team planted the first eleven of the 2,000 trees outside the Chitrabhanuji Panjarapole in the presence of the Sarpanch of Shankheshwar town and seven members of the Chitrabhanuji family.

The cost of preparing the ground by removing the wild grass, leveling, etc., is estimated to be $50 per tree. A nameplate with the donor’s name will be affixed to the tree, and a tree photograph will be provided. Please donate generously (in the multiple of 10 trees - $500 for ten trees) to the Vaiyavach committee of JAINA and create a legacy that will last for more than 200 years.
