Uttam Tap Dharma - Supreme Austerity
Today is the seventh day of the Das Lakshan Parva. In the critics on stanza 79 of Pravachansaar scripture, Jaysen Acharya writes as follows When one gives up all his toxic emotions and thereby gets engrossed in his eternal true nature of the soul, then it is known as austerity. That means one wins over the toxic emotions by getting engrossed in the eternal true nature of the self. In Dhaval scripture, it says that control of desires is known as austerity.

The word ‘uttam’ means an association of the right faith. In Chha Dhala scripture it says that without having the right faith if one ends up doing intense austerity, then spiritually it is of no help to him. He is not able to obtain liberation. The supreme austerity is the division of the conduct attribute. The conduct mode comes after the right faith and the right knowledge. Therefore, any austerity performed without the right faith is known as the austerity associated with the wrong faith.

In Bhagwati Aradhna scripture stanzas 1472 and 1473, say that with the innocent austerity, one can achieve any objects in the universe. As the fire burns the blades of dry grass, the fire of austerity burns all the karma. It is impossible to describe the value of the supreme austerity resulting in the stoppage of karma.

Such type of austerity is described in two forms- external and internal. The external austerity - baahya tap - is divided into 6 parts as follows.

  1. Total fasting- Upvas,
  2. Partial fasting-Avamaudarya,
  3. Food restrictions-Vrutti Parisankhyaan,
  4. Limiting the desired tasty food-Ras Parityaag,
  5. Lonely habitation- Vivikta Sayyaasan,
  6. Mortification of the body- Kaayaa Klesh.
The internal austerity - antarag tap- is divided into 6 parts as follow:
  1. Atonement - Prayashchitt,
  2. Respect - Vinay,
  3. Serving others - Vaiya Vrutt,
  4. Scripture study - Swadhyay,
  5. Relinquish pride and ego - Vyutsarg,
  6. Meditation - Dhyan.

With the help of external austerities, one can increase internal austerities. But if one performs the external austerities and there is no increased internal austerity, then such types of external austerities do not have any significance.

The scriptural studies and the meditation are the internal austerities and can be performed daily. They both are internal austerities and are an important part of one’s spiritual wellbeing.

In Ratnakaand Shraavakaachaar scripture (stanza 10), author Samantbhadra Swami says: One, who is free from the desires of the objects of the five senses, violence, and greed and is engrossed in the knowledge, meditation and austerity is a praiseworthy soul. Therefore, it proves that the real nature of the fasting (upvas) is to stay close to the nature of the soul by staying away from consumption of the food, toxic emotions, and objects of five senses. One getting engrossed in the nature of the soul by knowledge and mediation is the true form of fasting.

One also must remember that in these twelve types of austerities the successive austerity has increased significance. That means compared to the total fasting, the partial fasting and thereafter food restrictions, etc. carry increased significance. Meditation is the last form of austerity. If the soul gets engrossed in its true eternal nature for 48 minutes, one ends up with omniscient knowledge. Monk Rushabhdev undertook fasting for one year and it did not result in omniscient knowledge. Bharat Chakravarti, after becoming monk, obtained omniscient knowledge in 48 minutes getting engrossed into the eternal soul substance with meditation.

Actually, one can go in further details of all twelve austerities, but space does not allow.

We can analyze the nature of the self-study-swadhyay. There are five parts to it. They are:
  1. Vaanchanaa - reading the scriptures,
  2. Pruchhanaa - asking questions
  3. Recitation - anuprexa
  4. Aamnaay - repeated recitation with proper pronunciation, and
  5. Dharmopadesh- teaching.
The meditation is considered as the best austerity. Only in the meditation state, one can obtain complete knowledge - sarvagnata. The meditation means getting engrossed in the true nature of the eternal self, where it works as fire for the karma materials.

On the great occasion of the supreme austerity, let’s start with different austerities with the central theme of getting engrossed in the eternal true nature of the self.

The Nature and Form of Lesyas

4. Tejo Lesya

Its color is red like that of red lead, its taste sour-sweet like that of a half-ripe mango, smell fragrant like that of a flower and touch soft like that of butter.

Characteristics - A man under the influence of this Lesya (mental feeling) would be simple, afraid of sins, the religious, firm of mind, humble, and just.

Fruit - If a man dies with such feelings and thoughts, he would be born in the first or the second heaven by gradation.

JIVDAYA APPEAL
Jivdaya during Paryushan and Das Laxana is the most important of the 5 duties of a Shravak. That is the reason the first day of Paryushan is devoted to AMARI PRAVARTANA - a vow to not indulge in the violence of any kind. We express our acceptance of that vow by contributing to the Jivdaya fund.
