Uttam Sanyam Dharma - Supreme Self Restraint/Self Discipline
Today is the sixth day of the Das Lakshan Parva. It is known as Uttam Sanyam. Word ‘Uttam’ denotes association of the right faith and ‘Sanyam’ means self-restraint, self-discipline.

Human life is extremely precious because only in human life one can observe self-discipline. The subhuman, the infernal or the celestial living beings do not have the capacity for self- restraints.

In absolute terms, the self-discipline means to remove the attentive consciousness- Upyog- from worldly objects and to direct it towards the eternal true nature of the soul substance and then get engrossed in this true nature.

From the conventional point of view, self-discipline is mainly of two types.
  1. Praani Sanyam - disciple towards the living beings and
  2. Indriya Sanyam - discipline of the senses. Combined together, one observes the following disciplines in his life. They are:
    • Five vows of nonviolence, non-stealing, speaking truth, celibacy, and non-possessiveness.
    • He also observes five vigilances (Panch Samiti) in his life. They are:
      1. Irya samiti- careful movements, walking with attentive consciousness
      2. Bhasha samiti – careful speech, to speak what is true, beneficial, measured, and free from doubt
      3. Esana samiti –careful about obtaining the alms
      4. Aadaan nikshepan samiti – careful in lifting and laying down objects. Carefulness in taking and placing things, and
      5. Vyutsarga samiti - carefulness about the disposal of excreta etc.
    • one wins over his toxic emotions like anger, deceit, ego, and greed.
    • To control the activities of the mind speech and body.
    • One wins over the objects of the five senses.
The true form of the self-discipline is not possible without the associated presence of right faith- Samyak Darshan-. To get out of the sufferings of the trans-migratory life, one must observe the self-disciplines.

Once a living being obtains the right faith then he is on the 4th spiritual development stage and the nature of the self-discipline starts, and it keeps on increasing in intensity, as one advances further into his spiritual development stages from 4thth to 5th to 6th, etc.

A living being is wandering in the trans-migration since time infinite in the past. Very rarely he ends up getting to human life. Now he also has inquisitive nature of knowing the reality. He reads, listens and asks questions, and furthers his knowledge about the soul substance. His aim is to obtain the right faith and he observes the disciplines as mentioned above. This (human life) is a rarity and one should not miss this great opportunity bestowed upon him.

Since time infinite, one remains engrossed in the enjoyment of worldly objects. He, therefore, had lost his self-discipline. But he never found happiness in worldly objects. If he now brings his attention to the eternal true nature of the soul, then definitely will end up with a blissful state. He, therefore, obtains self-discipline in the soul.

The superior form of self-restraints is observed in the true monk who has experienced his eternal soul’s true nature. The partial self-discipline is observed in the householders with the right faith. Let’s all take a vow to observe self-discipline in this great occasion of the Dash Lakshan Maha Parva and make our life more meaningful.

THE KARMA THEORY IN JAINISM SERIES
The Nature and Form of Lesyas

3. Kapota Lesya

Its color is like that of the neck of a pigeon, taste sourer than that of an unripe mango; its smell and touch are similar to those of the Black Lesya.

Characteristics - A man under influence of this Lesya (mental feeling) is a fault-finder; he is bitter, harsh in speech; discloses of faults of others, and covers his own faults; he is a thief and an adulterer.

Fruit - If a man dies with such feelings and thoughts, he goes to the first, the second, or the third hell by gradation.

JIVDAYA APPEAL
Jivdaya during Paryushan and Das Laxana is the most important of the 5 duties of a Shravak. That is the reason the first day of Paryushan is devoted to AMARI PRAVARTANA - a vow to not indulge in the violence of any kind. We express our acceptance of that vow by contributing to the Jivdaya fund.
