Uttam Brahmcharya Dharma - Supreme Celibacy
|
|
Today is
the last day of the Dash Lakshan Maha Parva. It is known as Uttam Brahmcharya.
The definition given in Anagaar Dharmamrut: (4/60): Brahm means the soul and Charya means to get engrossed in it. Word ‘Uttam’ denotes the presence of the
right faith. So, one with the right faith gets out from the attachment of the worldly objects and engrossed in his eternal soul substance is called Uttam Brahmcharya-
supreme celibacy-. One who observes this celibacy enjoys the fruits of super sensuous bliss. Celibacy is considered the best form of austerity.
Getting engrossed in the real nature of the soul is important. But how can one do such a thing without knowing and having faith in the real nature of the
soul? Therefore, getting engrossed means the right conduct follows the right faith and right knowledge.
Therefore, the absolute meaning of the word “brahmacharya” means to get engrossed in the eternal soul substance. Conventionally, it is been said to avoid
touch related activities. That too has been restricted - not to have sexual relationships. But this meaning is from coarser perspectives - sthul drashti.
In actuality, the touch attribute of the matter can be in eight possible modes like cold, hot, hard, soft, dry, greasy, light, and heavy. So, when one tries
to get enjoyment from any of these eight modes of the matter then it is considered as getting pleasure from touch sensation. In conventional terms, one simply considers
avoiding sexual relationships only. This is ok but it is not a complete form of celibacy. When one tries to avoid any form of touch with its eight modes, then it is true
celibacy.
In the absolute definition, getting engrossed in the eternal soul substance is considered as celibacy. So, to achieve this state, not only touch sensation,
but objects of all five senses to be avoided is the real form of celibacy. Therefore, the real nature of celibacy means to stay away from the objects of five senses from
negation perspectives and to get engrossed in the eternal soul is from a positive perspective.
The scriptures say that not to have an inclination of attachments- raag - and not to enjoy the worldly objects- bhog- is known as ‘kaambhog’. In Samaysaar
stanza 4, Jaysen Aachaarya in his critics writes: touch and taste sensations are considered as part of inclination of attachments i.e. kaam, and smell, vision, and hearing
sensation as enjoyment senses- bhog-. Therefore, to reduce dependency on these five senses is a form of celibacy from negation perspectives. Therefore, someone making
the meaning of the word ‘kaambhog’ to be restricted to sexual activities is not the right understanding. Today, when the vow of celibacy is given to a person, it includes
having simple eating and simple living, to avoid beautification products, avoiding non-edible and heavy foods, etc. All these things suggest one to avoid the objects of
five senses.
In Tattvaarth sutra (chapter 7 verse7), Aacharya Umaswatiji said, listening, looking, memory, beautification products, tasty materials, sexual activity, etc.
objects of five senses are considered as detrimental to the celibacy vow.
So, objects of five senses to be controlled and at the same time making efforts to get engrossed into the eternal true nature of the self is a true form of
celibacy.
Over here, the importance of the absolute nature of the celibacy in the form of engrossment in the eternal soul substance. That does not mean that it reduces
the importance of the conventional form of celibacy in the form of controlling the objects of five senses. Over here the detail of absolute form is discussed in great
detail because the conventional form of celibacy is known to everyone. In life, there has to be an association of the conventional form with the absolute state of the
celibacy to obtain the desired result of the soul’s experiencing state.
In the ten virtues of the soul, the aforementioned nine virtues to be protected, one needs to have an enclosure in the form of virtual conduct of celibacy
as described above.
Let’s all imbibe in the real nature of celibacy on this important last day of Das Lakshana Parva and make it our way of life impregnated with such ten virtues
of the soul. We wish everyone to be on the path of right faith and further progress towards liberation.
Jai Jinendra
