PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Sadharmik brothers and sisters,
Jai Jinendra!

JAINA has established a need-based Scholarship program to encourage undergraduate students in their further education. The application deadline is June 18, 2020. Please share this message with everyone to help our youth in their studies. More information is given below.

We are also accepting your valuable donation for this Scholarship Program. See the details below.

During the Coronavirus Pandemic, the need for food in the community has increased substantially. Glad to know that Jain centers are supporting different organizations in food supply for needy people.

The first JAINA Board of Director’s meeting for 2020 will be a virtual meeting on June 20 and 21.

Have you filled out COVID-19 in Jain Population Survey yet? If not, please take the survey. JAINA has developed this survey to find out the incidence of COVID-19 in Jains. This survey will help us understand if Jains are affected less than the people who are non-vegetarians or not.

The survey doesn’t ask any personal information and neither identify anyone. Strict confidentiality will be maintained. Also at any time if you feel that you do not want to continue you can abandon and not complete the survey.

If you have any questions please reach out to Dr. Nitin Shah at 562 244 9035 or email him at nitinshahmd@gmail.com.

Jain Society of Greater Cleveland recently donated over $71,000 to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, while Jain Society of Metropolitan Washington partnered with the American Diversity Group for their ‘Serve a Meal, Groceries, Vegetables, and Fruit Distribution’. Read more about them below.

Jainism in the World

Watch this interesting and informative video on Jainism in the World which talks about how Jainism spread around the world in countries like the USA, Burma, China, Mongolia, Pakistan.

In 1893, Virchand Raghavji Gandhi represented Jainism for the first time in the United States of America. Later in 1904, the first Jain Temple was built in Saint Louis for Saint Louis World’s Fair.

In 1975, Acharya Sushil Kumar reached the USA and established Siddhachalam. Five years later, in 1980, Acharya Sushil Kumar and Gurudev Chitrabhanuji motivated the establishment of the Federation of Jain Associations in North America.

Similarly, the video also talks about how Jainism spread in other countries. Watch the video below.

JSGC Extends COVID-19 Assistance to Greater Cleveland Food Bank

The Jain Society of Greater Cleveland donated over $71,000 to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, for Covid-19 relief assistance to local community-at-large, during a brief event at the Jain Center. Food Bank’s CEO and President, Ms. Kristin Warzocha, sent a personal video message thanking the Jain Society for extending this much-needed support during these difficult times.

Food Bank’s Vice President of External Affairs, Ms. Mary Lavigne-Butler, and Director of Development, Ms. Lindsey Iero attended the event. They stated that the need for food in the community has increased substantially due to COVID-19 related unemployment and school closures etc. They remarked that the effectiveness of every dollar received in monetary donation becomes several-fold by virtue of government programs, donations from suppliers, bulk purchasing capabilities, etc. and essentially allows Food Bank to serve 4 meals per dollar of donation. They assured the Jain Society that this donation will be fully used to only procure food items compliant with Jain beliefs. They were both very appreciative of this donation and stated that this assistance from the Jain Society will provide substantial relief to the local community.

Jain Society’s Board of Trustees thanked the Society’s members for their compassionate and generous support of this cause. They expressed hope for speedy relief from the current COVID-19 pandemic and wished the Food Bank success in its endeavors.

Jain Story: Kapil Kevali

Jain philosophy very specifically mentions that human desires are as infinite as the sky itself. Muni Shri Kapil Kevali’s life is one such rare instance of unique divine light that dawns on a person who abandons worldly life full of infinite desires.

Kapil, son of the state minister Kashyap of Kaushambi city, was brought up in indulgence and had, therefore, remained totally unlettered. On seeing the palanquin of the learned state minister, who had replaced Kapil’s father Kashyap, tears rolled down Shridevi’s eyes. She exclaimed: “Alas, her son Kapil was unlettered!” Mother’s tears inspired Kapil to go for studies.
