10-year-old twin monks, Namichndrasagar Maharaj Saheb and Nemichandrasagar Maharaj Saheb born as Dhruv and Dhairya, respectively in the family of Piyush Mehta -
a diamond assorter in Surat, are set to astound the world when they will give discourses in English, Sanskrit, Prakrit, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi,
Kannada, Marwadi and Urdu at Baal Shatavdhaan programme being organized by Meditation Research Foundation in association with Shri Nakoda Parswanath
Shwetambar Mandir Trust in Bengaluru on December 2nd.

The monks will face questions on different countries, their capital cities, and official languages besides the arbitrary law of mathematics etc.
The event to held in the open hall of Palace Garden in Bengaluru, which will be attended by over 6,000 people. Anyone from the audience will test
their knowledge on Jain scriptures, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Bible, Quran and Shri Guru Granth Shahib.

The twin monks have studied up to 1st standard and received training from Gurudev Maha Shatavdhaani Abhinandanchandrasagarji Maharaj for two years
and are able to recall 350 sholaks after memorizing them in just two and a half hours.

According to Maha Shatavdhaani Abhinandanchandrasagarji Maharaj, this event will be first of its kind and will create a world record. These balmunis

Memorial Day 2015 - Remembering Those Who Have Served.

Dear friends,

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mahatma Gandhi

On this Memorial Day, we would like to take a moment to thank those who have chosen to live a life of military service so we can all appreciate the freedoms that we enjoy today of liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and freedom to express ourselves.

As we gather today at homes, parks, and social gatherings, we ask that we all take a moment to remember and express our gratitude not just to the men and women who have chosen to uphold these liberties but to their families as well.

This day pays tribute to our Fallen Veterans’ contributions to our Freedom, it should remind all who hear the phrase "Freedom for all comes with cost". These are not just words; they are a value, a belief in the way of life that puts service for others above self.

Countless individuals have chosen to apply this value through service for others despite the risk to their own lives in order to secure a future for their children / our children and future generations to come.

On this day we invite you to consider the question, “What is the measure of my resolve to give thanks for the freedoms that I have and that my family has?” Let us not take for granted the sacrifice of unsung heroes who have chosen to stand for our rights so that we can appreciate the economic and personal freedoms we enjoy.

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

On this occasion and national holiday, let us ‘as a community’ take some time to connect with those in our lives to convey our gratitude and be inspired to take action in our own lives to serve others.

Let us use “Memorial Day to Commemorate” the examples in our lives who have sacrificed their needs for our progress and may we contemplate ways we can sacrifice our own needs in the service of others.

Thank you to those who have served and continue to serve so we can appreciate the privileges and abilities to carry your legacy forward.

Sincerely,
Prem Jain

end to violence, terrorism, and conflict.

What Parents Can Do

Efforts are on to get Muni Sri to the foot steps of the hill by dholi. Around 1000 people are said to be assembled at the location.

It can be recalled here that there exists a long standing dispute on Girnar hills between the Jains & a section of people said to have been the followers of Guru Datta. This incident might have been an outfall of this dispute and a section of people might have been enraged over the visit of Digambar Jain Munis to the hillock.

Muni Sri Out of Danger: After the attack Muni Sri bleeded very badly & became unconcious. He was shifted to the hospital & 4 bottles each of glucose & blood were given to him. Muni Sri was operated later in the night (2.30 am January 2, 2013) at Junagadh and he is out of danger. His condition seems to be stable and he is responding to the treatment.

Upadhaya Muni 108 Sri Gyanasagarji Maharaj, Kshullakha 105 Sri Dhyanasagarji Maharaj, Aryika Sri Vigyanamati Mataji are all present at Girinar along with Muni Sri.

Renounced from Diksha: Since Muni Sri is subjected to medication he has been renounced from diksha as per the instructions received from his guru Achrya 108 Sri Pushpadantha Sagarji Maharaj. Muni Sri was very dissappointed owing to the fact that he has been renounced from Muni Diksha. He will be reinstated into the ascetichood once he recovers fully from the injuries.

Thoughts of Sallekhana: Since he has been renounced from Sallekhana he has started thinking about taking sallekhana.

Charukeerthi Swamiji of Moodabidri Condemns attack: His Holiness Swasti Sri Charukeerthi Panditacharyavarya Swamiji of Moodabidri Jain Mutt has condemned the attack on Muni Sri. He held special prayers in the premises of the Jain Mutt & chanted Namokara Mantra seeking Muni Sri's faster recovery. He has urged the Gujarat Government to punish the guilty.

- Inputs from Mayank Kanjolia, Darpan Jain, Manish Jain, Nipun Jain, H.P.Sumathikumar & Jain Heritage Centres News Service

JAIN
SOCIETY OF METROPOLITAN CHICAGO HOSTS JAIN ACADEMICIANS

On
November 18, 2012, "Gnan Panchami” day, Jain Society of Metropolitan Chicago
(JSMC) hosted a reception dinner for nearly 35 Jain academicians and
International School for Jain Studies (ISJS) officers. These academicians were part of 15,000
attendees at theAmerican Academy of Religions (AAR) and Dharma Academy of North
America (DANAM) annual convention at McCormick Convention center. This year 8
Jainism related papers were presented.

The
event was organized by ISJS as MEET & GREET event for the scholars who
teach Jainism at various American and Canadian Universities. Every year during
AAR & DANAM conference, ISJS arranges visits to the local Jain Temple and
meeting with members of the Jain community. In previous years, ISJS worked with Atlanta
and San Francisco Jain centers to host these Meet & Greet Events.

This
year, JSMC had to hire a bus to bring these esteemed delegates from the
convention center 35 miles away to their Temple complex in Bartlet, IL.Upon
arriving, these esteemed visitors were greeted by the Jain Center ladies, Trustees,
Executive Committee members and many community members in a traditional Jain
manner. They were than escorted in to the Temple and keynote speaker for the
evening, Dr. Whitney Kelting of Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts
was invited to do Aarti and the ISJS representatives were invited to perform
Mangal Divo. The delegates were then given a complete tour of the Temple
complex including Pathshala class rooms, library and Aaradhna hall. This was
followed by a grand Vegan dinner. Chairman of the Trustees, Arvindbhai Shah and
President Tejas Shah formally welcomed all the scholars and introduced his
committee members. During dinner, Dr. Sulekh
Jain ( Chairman, ISJS Governing Council) introduced scholars and Professors like Christopher Chapple, Whitney
Kelting, Kristi Willy, Tim Helton, Ramdas Lamb, Chris Haskett, Karma Lekshe,
Jerry Carney, Mathew Fisher, Ellen Gough and Steve Vose to name a few. Sulekh
Jain recognized many ISJS alumni among the scholars present. Later the mike was
passed for each guest to introduce oneself briefly. In addition to Dr. Sulekh
Jain, two other members of the ISJS governing Council (Dilip Shah, of Philadelphia and also past President of JAINA along with Dr. Subhash Jain, of Iowa City and
Prof Emeritus, University of Iowa) also traveled to Chicago for this event.

Following
the dinner, Prof. Chapple(Chaired professor at Loyola Marymount University and
senior member of the ISJS Academic Council) introduced Prof. Whitney Keltingand
invited her to deliver a talk. Prof. Whitney Kelting recalled that the first
Jain Temple she ever visited was this one years ago and it was wonderful to see
how it has grown over the years. She has been conducting on-‐going
field research with a community of Jains in Maharashtra, India. Her primary
areas of research are religions of South Asia, ritual theory, gender studies
and cultural studies. Her talk on the current trend in India of building new
large and modern "Teerthdhams” was very illuminating and later she spoke about
her book on heroic Jainwomen. She talked about lives of Mayna-Sundari, Rajul,
Sulsa and other illustrious women described in the hymn on "16 Satis”. Her command of Indian languages and
understanding of life of Jain women in India today really impressed and won
loud applause from everyone.

Prof.
Kelting expressed her gratitude towards the Jain community for a very warm
welcome. In addition to this, she traced her memory back to her first visit of
the Chicago Jain Center. She then briefly talked about her research experiences
of temples in Pune, Maharashtra. She was honored with a shawl and a memento as
a symbol of gratitude from the Jain community.Dr. Sulekh Jain introduced some
Jain members of Chicago for their contribution, scholars who are associated
with ISJS from its initiation and ISJS alumni. He finally concluded the evening
program with some words of appreciation for the Jain community of Chicago. The
scholars were taken back to their respective hotel in the same bus.

Nearly all the academics
were full of praise for the Jain Society of Metropolitan Chicago, for their
warmth, beautiful temple complex and the verities of activates there. These
annual Meet & Greet events are a great way to develop mutually beneficial relationship
between the Jain academics and the Jain community.

Picture

It is with great pride and pleasure, we report to you that one of our young Jain Professional and Jain eLibrary committee member, Shri Sahil S. Shah, decided to renounce the worldly life and materialistic possessions on December 2, 2012 at the foot hill of mount Girnar, Junagadha, Gujarat India.

Born and brought up in Ahmedabad, Sahil completed his Bachelor in Engineering (Electronics & Communications) in 2002, from L D Engineering College, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad – India.

He came to the USA in 2002 and obtained a Masters in Engineering (VLSI) at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2004.

He worked 7 years as an Engineer at Nvidia Corporation from 2004 to 2010 in Santa Clara, California USA.

He moved back to India permanently in December 2010 and continued to work with the same company in Bangalore until August 2011 and resigned to pursue the spiritual path.

About 4 years ago, during a visit to India, he met Gurudev Pujya Hemvallabhvijayji Maharaj Saheb (Pra-Shishya of Panyas Pravar Shri Chandrashekhar Maharaj Saheb of Tapovan) at Kandiwali, Mumbai. Since then he kept in-touch with him. For one year from August 2011 to August 2012, he stayed with him at Girnar Junagadh and then decided to renounce the worldly life.

I came to know Sahil in 2007 when he attended a two day Jain workshop conducted by me for young Jain professionals in the San Francisco Bay area. He is also a Pathashala teacher at the Milpitas California JCNC Jain Center. He loved the Jain eLibrary project and took the responsibility to categorize eBooks of the elibrary website. It was a very hard and difficult task to accomplish but he carefully reviewed each book (about 1600 books at that time) of the eLibrary and classified them.

It was a great surprise to me when I received an e-mail from him indicating that he is going to renounce the worldly life on December 2, 2012 at Mount Girnar Junagadh India. He is 31 years old. In his email, he indicates:

"Renouncing the worldly life and materialistic possessions, I will walk the path of my inner calling and will seek my purest self through Sanyam Marg (ascetic practice), a path that has seen the foot prints of infinite Tirthankars.

With the blessings of my Gurudev Param Pujya Hemvallabhvijayji M.S. (Pra Shishya of Panyas Pravar Shri Chandrashekhar M.S.), I will try to move closer to the ultimate goal of human life and will seek oneness with the supreme soul.

Born and brought up in Ahmedabad, India, I traveled to the USA to pursue higher education and the quintessential American dream.

Little did I know that the cosmic orders had other plans. It was with the grace of Adinath Prabhu at the Milpitas Temple, through Swädhyäy and Satsanga with "Kalyan Mitras" at JCNC, an inner voice beckoned to choose the life of real happiness, the life of renunciation.

I will remain indebted to the Jain Center of Northern California, the Swadhyay (religious study) group of JCNC, the numerous scholars, Veer Sainiks and revered Shravaks/Shravikas of JCNC who were instrumental in making this possible and helped sow the seeds of Vairagya/ detachment in me.

I request and seek blessings from each one of you on this pious occasion.”

Jai Girnar

Jai Neminath

--Sahil”

Sahil’s Diksha program is going to be held in India in Ahmedabad from November 25 to 28, 2012 and at Girnar in Junagadha from November 29, 2012 to December 2, 2012. We request the Jain community of North America to attend this function if any of you are in India during this time. This will be one of the life time opportunities you may have. The program schedule is attached at the end of this e-mail.

We wish him great success in his higher spiritual quest and seek inspiration from him for our spiritual upliftment.

Regards,

Pravin K Shah
Jaina Education Committee
Jain eLibrary Project (www.jainelibrary.org)
Raleigh, NC USA
jainaedu@gmail.com
919 859 4994 Home, 919 889 1900 Cell

<span style="font-weight: bold;

Jain
Pratistha Mahotasav – Franklin Township, NJ

June 29th marked the opening (also known
as Prathishta) of Central New Jersey’s first Jain Temple. This auspicious
event elicited excitement from members of the Jain community from near and far
alike. After years of fundraising, careful planning, and anticipation,
the dream of a new temple had come true.

To honor this occasion, the JainCenter
organized a 10-day celebration filled with traditional Pujas, catered meals,
and cultural events each night. As the Derasar is home to Swetambars,
Digambars, Sthanakwasis, and Shrimad Rajchandra devotees, each sect was able to
have its own opening.

Swetambar:

Swetambars’ Pratishta Mahotsav started
with Manekstamph Ropan, Mangal Toran, Kumbh Sthapana Pujan, lighting of the
Akhand Deepak, and Jawara Ropan. These opening ceremonies were then
followed by a series of Pujans that took place on a daily basis. Gaadi Pujan
was also performed by SakalSangh and Snatra Puja took place in the Rang Mandap
everyday.

On Sunday July 1st, Utthapan Vidhi of all
5 Pratimajis was performed at Shantinathji Derasar prior to the Pratimajis’
Pravesh to the Franklin Township Derasar. The anticipation of the Pravesh
was noticeable as all members of the Sangh gathered outside to welcome the
Pratimajis.

On July 5th, Pravesh in the Derasar and
Pohkana were performed. Attendees were excited to see the Bhagwans arrive
at their final destination. This was followed by 18 Abhisheks of all of
the Pratimajis.

Saturday July 7th was of utmost
importance as the final steps to complete Franklin Township Derasar’s Pratishthaa were taken. The entire Sangh
came together at 7am to watch as each Pratimaji was Pratishthaith (cemented into place
forever). At 9:30, Pushpa-Vrushti took place; a helicopter circled the
Shikhar of the Derasar and showered it with flower petals. Finally, on
Sunday July 8th at 5am sharp, the first official Dwar Opening of the Derasar to
the public took place.

As all of these ceremonies brought
happiness among Sangh members, Kalyanak celebration amplified their joy even
further. This included Chyvan, Janma, and Diksha Kalyanak of Muni Suvrat
Swami as well as Sughosha Ghant Naad, Meru Parvat Abhishek, Bhagwan’s
childhood, Vivah Mahotsav, Rajyabhishek, and Varshidan.

Digambar:

The Digambar ceremony took place over the
course of 3 days. It was kicked off by Dhwaja Ropan and a Mandap
Inauguration. Following this were Vidhi Nayak, Nvidhi Adhyaksha Bhagwan
Pravesh, and a procession. 4 Pujas (Indra Pratishthaa, Yag Mandal Vidhan, Garbh
Kalyanak, and Janma Kaylanak) also took place on the first day. The
second day was marked by Diksha Kalyanak, Vargodo, and Vedi Suddhi of the
pedastal . Additionally, the First Darshan took place in the Mandap
followed by Samosaran Darshan. To wrap things up, another Vargodo and Abhishek
of all of the Bhagwans in the temple took place. The joy and excitement
in the Digambar community was palpable throughout all of these events.

Sthankwasis:

Sthanakwasis took part in a half day
ceremony that commenced with Navkar Mantra Patt Pratishtha. Lectures from various
dignitaries speaking about the importance of Navkar Mantra were attended by
all. Together, the community then chanted 108 Navkar Mantras and attended
Samuh Samayik conducted by Shri Tarlaben Doshi. Members were overcome
with joy and pledged to meet as a community at least once a month to take part
in Samuh Samayik.

Shrimad Rajchandra:

Shrimad Rajchandra devotees celebrated
the opening by chanting Mantra and offering donations. They also hosted
Prayer and Shobha Yatra after which they all congregated in Shrimad Dhyan
Mandhir for the first time. Upon speaking to members of the Shrimad
Rajchandra school, it was clear that they were very excited for a new place of
spiritual worship as well as their own prayer hall within it.

Cultural Activities:

In additional to daily religious ceremonies, nightly cultural programs
were organized. Each spiritual morning and afternoon was followed by a
delicious dinner and entertainment from peers in the community. This was
a great way for members of the Jain Sangh to enjoy food from different regions
of Gujarat and provided them with a chance to socialize while watching some
great performances.

Each Pathshala developed and took part in
their own show. Edison Pathshala told the love story of Nem Rajul through
prose and dance. The Jersey City Pathshala group performed a skit about
Aimutta Muni that was well-received. The Caldwell team decided to step out of normal
bounds and refreshed the audience with a Broadway-inspired musical.
Finally, bringing back the importance of samayik in modern world intertwined
with humor, the South Brunswick Pathshala performed an engaging and funny skit
based on "All Izz Well”.

As each Pathshala worked supremely hard
on their respective performance, so did other members of the community.
Talented musicians put together a symphony that paid homage to revered Jain
stavans. Each pathashala participated to choreograph dances to well-known Jain
songs.

Of course, no program is complete without
thanking those who worked tirelessly to put together 10 days of celebration.
As such, dignitaries those traveled from near and far were introduced to the
audience. The Board of Trustees and Executive Committee were also asked
to come on stage so the Sangh could recognize their dedication and hard work.

Aside from performances, the various Pathshalas
collaborated to create an excellent panch kalyanak exhibition of Mahavir
Swami’s life. The dioramas were beautifully created with vibrant colors,
distinct characters, and even mechanical aspects.

Each night a very dedicated group
performed Aangi to the Pratimajis. This was of great importance and was
overseen carefully. In addition, a creative committee spent many hours
decorating the entire Derasar and the prayer hall. With tasteful wall
hangings as well as artwork lining the halls, they created a welcoming atmosphere
that attendees took note of and appreciated.

Also not to be overlooked, the food
committee organized close to 30 meals for everyone to enjoy. They had the
task of supplying Jain food that was pleasing to taste and varied each
night. They took on this responsibility with enthusiasm and passion and
the output was pleasing to all. The parking and the transportation teams added
to the convenience for over 5000 attendees.

Overall, the Pratishtha Mahotsav was a remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime
event enjoyed by a tightly knit Jain community. Each member participated
with great joy and dedication and added to its success.

YJA Convention 2012 Experience - Saejal Chatter

As I stepped onto the escalator to baggage claim, still
partially groggy from my three-hour inflight nap, I was unaware of the lasting
impact YJA 2012 would have on me. From the second I stepped into the lobby of
the hotel, till long after I came back home, I was smiling.

From sessions led by both my roommate and non-profit
organizations, such as Meatless Monday, I have bettered my understanding of how
to apply the Jain philosophy to myself, and also how to use this information to
make a helping impact in the world. I was saddened to learn about the depth of
cruelty in meat production. Although I have always been vegetarian, I am now
more aware and have been further prompted to spread this information outside
the Jain community.

I now successfully know the "elevator speech,” a two-minute
piece highlighting the core principles and values of Jainism: Ahimsa,
Anekantavada, and Aparigraha. I am really glad that I will be more equipped to
explain Jainism to others; it is much easier. In a session focused on maintaining
Jain values in college, I realized that even though I would not be able to
visit the mandir as often, or have many other Jains on campus to interact with,
I could still practice Jainism on a daily basis. The panel of college students
spoke about having an enlightened mindfulness of Maan (thought), Vachan
(Speech), and Kaya (Action). I now also feel well prepared for college life and
maintaining my Jain identity.

My favorite session was on Meditation. It was the first time
I had an extensive formal meditation session, and I particularly enjoyed
delving into its philosophy and benefits. Although the session was only an hour
long, the calm I felt lasted long after the meditating ended. I hope to
practice this skill for the rest of my life. I believe that I am now leading a
stronger Jain Way of Life.

Our keynote speaker Vivek Maru is one of the most
influential people for young Jains today. He spends a lot of time working in
various African countries promoting social activism. His speech primarily covered
his justice program in Sierra Leone. As Keval Gala said, "It's not every day
you get to hear someone end an inspirational speech with the epic line ‘I'm
sorry, but I must leave to catch my flight to Uganda.’”

While enjoying the Jain version of different ethnic foods,
packing into an elevator, or dancing to Bollywood, American, or traditional
Indian music, I was constantly meeting new people. I was excited to meet so
many other Jains my age. It was amazing how I learned so much through
interacting with other people as I did from sessions. Before going to YJA I had
not met many of the other Jain’s from New England itself! We are all making an
effort to stay in touch, and successfully connect all young Jains in the Boston
area. It was a unique experience to be part of the national Jain community. Soleil
Shah articulately encompassed the whole experience: "YJA was, by far, one of
the most exciting, fun, enlightening, and spectacular events that I have ever
attended.” Thank you to everyone who organized this amazing event. I can’t
imagine the hard work that went into it, but I know that everyone I talked to
had the time of his or her lives. I can’t wait till YJA 2014!

Youth

attendees left the convention inspired by the sessions they attended and the speakers they met. Attendees had the opportunity to connect with other youth and make lifelong friendships while learning how Jainism is a source of support at each phase from the teenage social network to a young graduate’s career. YJA 2012 allowed youth to connect, to learn, and to share their thoughts with one another on a variety of subjects. Sessions, speakers, and new friends all came together to complete the Evolution of a Mind. Through a variety of fun, innovative, and interactive programming experiences, attendees engaged in wideranging activities and sessions related to atma (the soul), developing leadership, and creating a bettercommunity.

This year’s convention featured a diverse group of speakers ranging from a variety of fields, including politics, social activism, and bodybuilding. Attendees experienced more of an interactive dialogue with speakers and not only learned about the evolving opportunities to practice Jainism in today’s modern society, but also were challenged to ponder about issues facing our generation. YJA 2012’s social events provided an avenue for young Jains to make everlasting friendships. The

weekend was full of fun and excitement as YJA 2012 brought a twist to tradition. The second night was topped off with a 90’s Social for the younger crowd and a Masquerade Ball for the older crowd. The weekend ended with a formal full of illusions as everyone attended the Alice in Wonderland Formal and reminisced at the JNF Starlight Slumber Party. Overall, the goal of YJA 2012 was to provide Jain youth the opportunity to engage in spiritual, networking, and social activities. On top of enriching dharmic discussions, the convention offered unique social events from a range of activities that involve art (music, dance and drawing competition) to a night of memories (formal dinner and dance).
Jain Studies at Claremont Lincoln University - 2nd Quarter Report

Welcome to the summer! We hope this find you very well. We are pleased to send this

second quarter report to our friends and supporters.

As many of you know, the Jain Studies program was inaugurated on September 6, 2011,

at Claremont Lincoln University in Claremont, California (a suburb of Los Angeles) in a

public welcoming ceremony. Many prominent Jain leaders were present, as well as

several JAINA past presidents, Pramodaben Chitrabhanu, and a number of Jains from the

Jain Center of Southern California. Our first ten months of collaboration with the Jain

community has been a great success, both in the U.S. and in India.

Seven Graduate Students Traveled to India to Attend the ISJS Program

This summer we sent our first cohort of seven students from Claremont to take part in the

ISJS summer education program in India. Please note that in the past years, six other

Claremont graduate students had attended ISJS programs in India. Prior to their

departure, this year’s students, along with seven other students and friends of Claremont

Lincoln, visited the Jain Center of Southern California to participate in puja, aarti, a tour

of the temple images, and a delicious Jain meal. Our students gave overwhelmingly

positive feedback on this unique experience.

Digital Recordings of Jain Lecture Material

Additionally, a group of students has begun to digitally record existing Jain lectures in

order to create an online resource for Jains and Jain scholars around the world. These

students received several hours of training in basic Sanskrit pronunciation for this project.

Over 100 books were generously donated to the university library to increase our Jain

holdings.

We are working with Dilip Shah to create a series of brief online lectures on Jainism.

These videos will be free and open-access to anyone who visits the Jain Studies website;

they will also be publicized through our Jain Studies Facebook page.

First International Jain Conference on Bioethics in 2012.

The first International Jain Conference on Bioethics will be held at Claremont on August

24-25. With the generous gift from Gurudev Chitrabhanu Ji and Pramoda on behalf of the

Jain Meditation International Center, as well as three other Jain donors, this conference is

shaping up to be an exceptional international event, bringing contemporary scholarship

together with ancient wisdom.

To date, we have 22 speakers confirmed for this event. In addition to numerous papers

regarding Jain views of birth, life, death, and rebirth, we also have several high-level

participants from across other traditions. Our four lauded keynote speakers—Crawford

Cromwell, D.K. Bobra, Brian Cummings, and James Hughes—will anchor the event.

World-renowned bioethicist Rabbi Eliot Dorff will share a distinctly Jewish perspective

on life. Faisel Qazi, an Islamic neurologist, will engage the complexities of death from a

Muslim perspective. We have speakers from Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian traditions, as

well as those writing from the framework of philosophical ethics and animal welfare.

Paper topics cover a vast scope, including infanticide, reincarnation, religious and

national law, Sallekhana, sexual selection, and ethical dilemmas faced by practitioners in

their day-to-day professional practice.

We have developed a close working relationship with the Conference committee of Dr.

Nitin Shah, Dr. Manoj Jain, Dr. Manish Mehta, and Raj Dhami, and our work together is

nurturing genuine friendship. One of our Ph.D. students, Matthew Fisher, has been

serving as the Conference Coordinator, which is an invaluable experience for him

academically and professionally. As a winner of this year’s ISJS Essay contest at

Claremont Lincoln, Matthew also went to India this summer, making the conference

much more personal and tangible for him. These opportunities for friendship and learning

foster a fresh kind of collaborative leadership which Matt exemplifies and which

Claremont Lincoln aims at for all of its students.

This conference has also been a wonderful opportunity for our campus catering staff to

learn and grow. The chefs did not know much about Jainism, nor about the unique

reverence for life embodied in Jain vegetarianism. Although they regularly provide plantbased

dining options for our community, learning from our Jain partners about the levels

of compassion in a Jain diet was an adventure in culinary creativity. Dr. Nitin Shah

himself came to campus on June 12, bringing a dish prepared by his sister. Kinna Gandhi

also joined the day’s events and prepared a dish for the chefs to try as well. The head

chef, in turn, had researched and created a dish for them as well. It was an unexpected

moment of fellowship centered on the efforts to eat compassionately. The Jain Way of

Life is vividly expressed in the menu planning for this conference, and the catering staff,

as well as our own administrators, is learning a great deal.

Graduate Level Courses in Jainism

The next year of Jain Studies promises to be even more exciting. Already Dr. Nitin Shah

presented a lecture titled "Asian Religions in America -‐ Jain Dharma" to graduate students on June 12 as part of a summer intensive class on Religions in America. A graduate course will be offered this fall, titled, "Applied Jainism: Bioethics Among the Dharma Traditions.” Brianne Donaldson, our Dharma coordinator at Claremont, will teach this course and will offer an "Open Ashram” time of quiet Jain meditation thirty minutes prior to this class each week. Please see the attached flyer for details on this class. Jain community members are welcome to attend. For Jain students at other universities, Claremont Lincoln has agreements with many universities in southern California to transfer credits. In the spring, we will offer another graduate course titled "Jain Dharma: Nonviolence in Theory and Practice.”

Ahimsa Day & World Parliament of Religions Symposium at Claremont
On October 2, we will host an Ahimsa Day celebration that will be planned by the students who studied in India this summer. Gandhi, which

coincides with our petition to the government of India to fund a chair in Jain Studies in

his honor at Claremont Lincoln.

Launch of the Jain Partition Project – Studying the Role of Jains During the

Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947

Claremont Lincoln University is launching a major research project into the experience of

Jains during the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan. We are attempting to raise $25,000

for the first phase of the project. To date, we have a commitment of $20,000 from Jain

individuals in India and the U.S. and are waiting to hear back from the American

Academy of Religion on an additional grant. We have secured funding from Vidya Sagar

Institute of Management in Bhopal, for all travel, room and board expenses for our

researchers while in India. Four researchers at two Indian universities have also joined

our collaborative research team.

2013 International Jain Conference on Women’s Perspectives in Dharma Traditions

In consultation with Professor Christopher Chapple at Loyola Marymount University, our

Jain Studies academic advisor, we have crafted a proposal for The 2nd International Jain

Conference at Claremont on Women’s Perspectives in the Dharma Traditions. This

conference seeks to provide a forum for participants to engage the evolving identity of Dharmic women who live at the intersection of gender roles, professional aspirations,

historical femininity, textual representation, cosmological archetypes, dynamic

sexualities, cross-cultural nationalities and religious commitments. We believe that this

will be the first formal event in which scholars and practitioners doing advanced work in

this field can come together to creatively engage the complexities of women’s diverse

experience within and contributions to the evolving shape of a globalizing Dharma.

Though we intend to target a number of diverse individuals to contribute to this

conference, we are very excited to have a high percentage of women speakers

participating in this event.

Visiting Scholar from India for Three-Year Program

To expand our international collaboration and enhance the Jain studies program at

Claremont Lincoln has supported the application of a young Jain professor in India in his

pursuit of a three-year fellowship issued by the Government of India. This fellowship will

allow this professor to be a visiting scholar, with access to our library and computer labs,

doing research on Jain environment and ecology issues

Please know that the Claremont Lincoln community values this partnership with the Jain

community tremendously. Each step we take together strengthens the foundation of a

sustainable and robust academic program enriched with the lived practice and knowledge

of the Jain community in North America and India. Passing that integrated experience

onto our students, and building friendships among former strangers, is the goal of this

work, as we together attempt to actively consider and care for the well-being of all life.

We look forward to the next quarter of a thriving Jain Studies program.

Brianne Donaldson

Coordinator, Dharma Traditions

Ph.D. Candidate, Process Studies

Claremont Lincoln University

Claremont, California
