Uttam Sauch Dharma - Supreme Purity
Today is the fourth day of the Das Lakshan Parva. The word “Sauch” means purity. The word ‘Uttam’ means associated with the right faith.

Supreme purity is an integral part of the eternal true nature of the soul substance. The trans-migratory soul has greed as one of the toxic emotions - lobh kashaya. The purity is the nature of the soul and its altered form is represented by greed in a living being.

Greed is considered as the father of all the toxic emotions. It is the root cause for the origination of the rest of the toxic emotions. The living being has greed. He desires to acquire worldly objects. To fulfill this greed, he ends up playing deceitful nature. If he is successful, then the ego sets in, and if he fails then anger gets generated. Therefore, greed invites the rest of the toxic emotions. In scripture Gnanarvarn, Acharya Shubhchandraji in stanza 19 says that: the person possessed with greed can kill his boss, guru, brother, wife, old and young, weak and helpless person to fulfill his desires. All the necessary activities which lead to the infernal realm of existence - Narak Gati- start with greed.

An animal satisfies its hunger and then rests. A man never gets satisfied with his desires. He remains busy collecting more and has no time to enjoy the collected things. He never gets satisfaction. One forgets that to get money etc. depends on the fruition of his past material karma. In Bhagwati Aradhna scripture (1436) it says: Even with intense desire, one does not get money if there is no fruition of the auspicious material karma and the person with the fruition of the material karma, easily gets money without even trying. Therefore, one must understand that it’s not his desires, but the fruition of his past karma is the real reason and thereby gives up his greedy nature. Furthermore, in stanza 1437 and 1438, it says that in the past one has accepted and also has relinquished material objects infinite times. So, one should not get surprised about it.

Besides greed for money, one can also have cravings for fame, beauty, and fulfillment of the desires for the objects of the five senses.

Acharya Armrutchandraji in Tattvaarthsaar scripture (stanza 17) says: there are four types of greed-means of enjoyment, reenjoyment, life, and objects of five senses - bhog, upbhog, jivan, and indriya vishayo. To give up such greed will be the purity nature of the soul.

In Parmatmaprakash Saar scripture (stanza 112 and 113) it says: greed for the attraction of the light, the butterfly kills self, greed for sound gets deer killed by the hunter’s arrow, greed for the touch of the female elephant the male falls down in the ditch, greed for the smell makes a wasp gets trapped in the lotus, and the greed for the taste makes the fish getting trapped in the fisherman’s hook.

Therefore, greed for five senses is the principal cause of the downfall of a living being. It is called greed when one has an affinity for worldly objects, but the same is called love and affection when it is towards someone.

In the deluding karma, greed is the last one to go at the 10th spiritual development stage. Once that happens then the living being ends up getting a passionless state and soon ends up with an omniscient stage, which leads to liberation.

Right conduct is the most important virtue of the soul substance. It gets manifested once the toxic emotions of greed etc. come to an end.

Purity attribute gets manifested once all the toxic emotions including greed stop operating. This process starts from 4th spiritual development stage and completes at the end of the 10th spiritual development stage.

The living beings consider bodily purity as purity but in reality, the purity of the soul is the important one. Therefore, in Dash Lakshan Puja, it says that Muniraaj may have dirt on the body but internally. He has a pure state.

Therefore, on this auspicious day of the purity attribute of the soul, let us all get engrossed in the true nature of the eternal soul substance and experience the true form of purity.

The Nature and Form of Lesyas

Let’s learn about six different forms of lesyas, their characteristics and it’s fruit.

1. Black Lesya

Color darker than that of collyrium, taste more bitter than that of neem leaves; smell many times worse than that of a dead serpent; touch harsher than that of the tongue of a cow.

Characteristics - A man overcome with this Lesya (mental feeling) would have the most intense kasaya; would live promiscuous and uncontrolled amorous life; would commit violence and killing, without being afraid of this or the other world; would eat meat.

Fruit - It a man dies with such black feelings and thoughts, he would go to the fifth, the sixth, or the seventh hell by gradation.

Jivdaya during Paryushan is the most important of the 5 duties of a Shravak. That is the reason the first day of Paryushan is devoted to AMARI PRAVARTANA - a vow to not indulge in the violence of any kind. We express our acceptance of that vow by contributing to the Jivdaya fund.
