Uttam Aarjava - Supreme Straightforwardness
|
|
Today is
the third day of Das Lakshan Maha Parva. It is known as Uttam Aarjava - Supreme Straightforwardness virtue of the soul. Just like the first two virtues, the straightforwardness
is also the important virtue of the soul substance.
The straightforwardness virtue of the soul is exactly opposite of the transmigratory soul’s altered state of the deceitfulness. When one looks at the soul
from the deceitful nature of the toxic emotion-maayaa kashaay-, the soul is having an important virtue of the straightforwardness- aarjava-. Word ‘Uttam’ - supreme - denotes
the presence of the right faith, enlightenment- Samyak Darshan-. The soul is full of its peaceful nature and there is no crookedness present within.
The living being with the nature of crookedness thinks some one thing, speaks something another and behaves in an entirely different manner. To make sure
his purpose is served, he uses his deceptive nature.
One must understand that any material gains he may get are due to the fruition of the previously bonded karma. Nothing is achieved by deceptive practices.
In fact, one may end up getting wordily benefit with the deceptive practice but ultimately it ends up binding bad karma which in the future gives fruition with bad results.
Deceptive practices are conducted by only a weak person. The person with the strength achieves everything with his own personal efforts - Purusharth. A deceptive
person is always in fear and in doubt. He has constant fear that his wrongful state will be exposed. Nobody puts faith in him.
Unity of the mind speech and action is known as the straightforwardness attribute of the soul. He thinks right, speak right, and acts right. A deceitful natured
person has disarray of the mind speech and bodily action. In Asht Prakaari Pujan- worshipping the lord with eight auspicious substances- one uses the flower to imitate
the straightforward nature of the soul. Just the flower is soft from within and outside, the soul is also having a straightforward nature of softness inside out.
To manifest the straightforwardness attribute of the soul in the mode, first of all, one must make sure that deceitful nature is not present in the mind,
speech, and bodily action. In fact, it means that the soul remains in its innate state and does not come out in the altered form of inclination of attachment and aversion
- Raag and Dwesh-. Only through the medium of mind, speech, and body, the altered state is manifested. The soul cannot do anything to the worldly objects, but to believe
on the contrary view that the soul is the doer of the worldly objects, is the real deceitful nature of the soul. Association with worldly objects produces only the misery
but instead to believe that one gets happiness from them is itself a deceitful nature.
To remove the deceitful nature, one does not have to work on it. Instead, just the light removes darkness, one bringing his attention to the eternal true
nature of the soul substance, the deceitful nature automatically disappears.
On this auspicious day of Uttam Aarjava, let’s resolve to get engrossed in the soul substance and thereby remove our darkness of the deceitful nature.

THE KARMA THEORY IN JAINISM SERIES
|
|
Lesya
Karmic
stain or aura.
Three words are very well-known is religious literature - Rajoguna, Sattvguna, and Tamoguna. While discussing these words, it is said that the
Rajoguna delights the mind by its charm and attractive nature, its color is therefore red; the mind becomes pure by the Sattvaguna, its color is therefore white. Knowledge
is obscured by the Tamoguna, therefore its color is black. Indian thinkers have made thought-provoking discussions about the conditions of the soul on the basis of the
colors of the Karmas.
The theory propounded by Sramana Bhagwan Mahavira in this connection is known as the ‘Lesya theory’. The feeling or thought which arises in the mind of a
soul by contact with a material substance (pudgal-dravya) is called ‘Lesya’. Lesyas are material and therefore they have color, smell, taste, and touch. There are 6 Lesyas.
They have been named on the basis of their colors.

Jivdaya during Paryushan is the most important of the 5 duties of a Shravak. That is the reason the first day of Paryushan is devoted to AMARI PRAVARTANA - a vow to not indulge in the violence of any kind. We express our acceptance of that vow by contributing
to the Jivdaya fund.
