Uttam Mardav - Supreme Modesty
|
|
Just like
the forbearance, the modesty is also an important virtue of the soul. Word “Uttam” associated with it denotes the presence of enlightenment, right faith - Samyak Darshan.
The soul is the embodiment of infinite virtues but when one looks at the soul from the ego perspectives, then the soul appears to have the virtue of the modesty within.
So, let’s analyze the nature of the ego to better understand the nature of modesty.
One is associated with the altered state of the ego since time infinite. The ego is the exact opposite of the modesty virtue of the soul. This ego is represented
in the form of arrogance when praises are showered to the living being. It is in the form of dejection when the criticism is shown to the living being.
Having the ego makes one considers himself superior to the others. This leads to the absence of politeness. Just to fulfill the ego, he ends up playing dirty
games, windups spending his material wealth, and also severs the relationships with family and friends.
In the toxic emotions, the first one is the anger and thereafter the second one is ego. They both combined together are known as the inclination of aversion
- dwesh bhaav. The trans migratory soul is full of inclination of aversions since the time infinite in the past.
In general, for a mundane soul, in the adverse situation, he ends up with the anger and in the favorable situation ends up with the ego. Failure is the mother
of anger and success is the mother of the ego state. The ego state is the sweet poison for the soul.
Shrimad Rajchandraji has said: if there was no ego then the liberation is here – “Maan Na Hoy To Moksh Ahi J Chhe”.
What does it mean? There are four forms of toxic emotions - Kashaya-: anger deceit ego and greed. There are four realms of existence for a trans migratory
soul: infernal, subhuman, human, and celestial. The anger state is predominantly displayed in infernal one, the deceit is principally in subhuman, the ego state is primarily
present in the humans and the greed is mostly displayed in celestial living beings. Therefore, if humans get free from the ego state, then he can achieve the dissociation
from toxic emotions easily and thereby can obtain enlightenment.
It is not surprising that the living being has an ego about his status etc. He should be aware that he came out of the lowest form of life -Nigodh- and now
is a human being. One should not waste this life in an egoistic state. For example, a celestial living being ends up with one sense of life, and a king, later on, ends
up with the life of a worm, etc. One, who was born in a higher family ends up with lower family birth later on. For the worldly status, the living being works very hard
and forgets to understand that the transient status is like a bubble. Therefore, he must give up the egoistic state and respect the monks, etc. This will help one to purify
himself.
Acharya Samantbhandra in stanza 25 of Ratnakaand Shravakachar says:
ज्ञानं पूजां कुलं जातिं बलमृद्धिं तपो वपुः |
अष्टावाश्रित्य मानित्वं स्मयमाहुर्गतस्मया: ||
It says that the ego state is generated in the following eight possible ways in a living being.
- Knowledge – Gnan
- Worship – Pooja
- Heredity – Kul
- Caste – Jati
- Power – Bal
- Affluence – Riddhi
- Austerity – Tap
- Physique – Sharir.
Above mentioned egoistic state is prevalent in the ignorant soul having no self-experiencing of the soul’s eternal state. Once a living being ends up with the right faith -Samyak Darshan- then the ego state is gone. Of course, the right faith person may
have an ego but is at the minuscule level. The softness of modesty is absent in the person with arrogance and with the dejection. The modesty state is present when one
considers everyone to be the same status and therefore is devoid of the ego and the dejection state. Modesty is the true state of the enlightened soul.
On this auspicious day of supreme modesty, let us all work together to dissolve our ego state and cultivate the modesty virtue within us.

THE KARMA THEORY IN JAINISM SERIES
|
|
Control of the Kashayas - Continued...
The kasayas can be subsided, subsided-cum-destroyed, or destroyed. To do this, the help of the antidotes of Kasayas
should be adopted. Bhavana (reflections) are the antidotes of Kasyas. Kasayas can be dissolved by making the Bhavanas strong and firm.
- The antidote of anger is peace.
- The antidote or mana (pride) is humility.
- The antidote of deceit is straightforwardness.
- The antidote of greed is contentment.
By strengthening the samskaras (impressions) of peace, humility, straightforwardness, and contentment, the Kasayas are destroyed. When the Kasayas are completely destroyed, then and only then an aspirant becomes detached.

Jivdaya during Paryushan is the most important of the 5 duties of a Shravak. That is the reason the first day of Paryushan is devoted to AMARI PRAVARTANA - a vow to not indulge in the violence of any kind. We express our acceptance of that vow by contributing
to the Jivdaya fund.
