Celebrating Das Lakshana
Das Lakshan Parva is celebrated by the Jain Community for self-purification and upliftment is meant to adhere to the ten universal virtues in practical life and leads us far from the mad dash for material prosperity to the right path, which ultimately leads us to our destination i.e. salvation

This is the festival through which an attempt is made to put an end to all vices, passions, and lustful desires in thought, speech, and action. This is the festival in which ten universal virtues like forgiveness, contentment, and self-restraint are venerated and worshipped for self-purification.

During these ten days celebration, from Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami to Anant Chaturdashi, Jains observe fast in various forms and give alms (Daan). They leave certain things (Tyag) and observe strictly the principles of the Parva. Each day of the Parva has its own importance. Let’s learn about the first virtue, Uttam Kshama.
Uttam Kshama - Supreme Forbearance
Forbearance – Kshama- is the nature of the soul. When forbearance is operating then the anger disappears, just like the light removes the darkness.

In general, when one talks about forbearance, it says the absence of anger. Does it mean that Jainism is always from negative perspectives? No, the presence of forbearance, the true nature of the soul is important to consider, not the absence of anger.

In scriptures it says: Kshamaa Virashya Bhushanam- forbearance is the ornament of the brave one. lord Mahavir Swami and Parshwanath Bhagwaan are the shining examples of having supreme forbearance against the intense calamity- Krodh Ke Prati Kshamaa Ke Pratik Rup Parshwanaath Bhagwaan.

First, let us analyze the nature of the anger. Anger is a disturbed state of the mind and destroys its peaceful nature. Anger is a transient state and can take a turn into the long term in the form of having thoughts of revenge, which is also equally detrimental to the soul.

The origin of anger is one’s ignorance. As long as one looks at worldly objects in the form of beneficial or detrimental, the anger gets generated. If my happiness or misery is dependent on the worldly objects, then anger gets generated. When the worldly objects do not turn out according to one’s desire, then the anger gets produced.

Word “supreme” associated with forbearance denotes having the presence of the right faith- Samyak Darshan-. Does it mean that wrong faith- Mithya Drishti Jeev- cannot have a true form of forbearance? Anger dissipation occurs by taking refuge in the soul substance. A wrong faith person has no experiencing of the soul, thereby does not have a true form of forbearance. Even though the wrong faith person may have a milder form of anger but having doership of the worldly objects does not make the end of the infinite bonding anger material karma.

The supreme forbearance etc. ten virtues of the soul are the modification of the conduct attribute of the soul. The right conduct sets in only after having the right faith- Samyak Darshan-. From an absolute point of view, the supreme forbearance means by taking refuge into the eternal true nature of the soul and thereby not to have an altered state of the anger getting generated within.

From a conventional point of view, the supreme forbearance means one is not getting involved in the anger state even though the situation permits. There are several points to consider in this scenario.

When someone speaks badly about him, he keeps calm and does not react, speaking bad or even having remorse within. He is the one with forbearance. The person does not get excited when someone expresses his attributes in derogatory manners. He maintains his quietude even when someone physically harms him. This is from his strength and not from weakness point of view.

Someone takes possessions away and throws the person out of the home and takes away his belongings. The person with forbearance maintains peace in his mind. Even if life comes to an end, the person with forbearance thinks that it’s the body getting separated from the soul, but in actuality, the soul can never be born or can be destroyed. This is the real nature of the supreme forbearance. He keeps all such thought processes from his strength and not from weakness perspectives.

On this first day of Das Lakshana lets imbibe the virtue of the forbearance and put it into action and that will be the greatest worship for one towards his eternal pure nature of the soul.

THE KARMA THEORY IN JAINISM SERIES
Control of the Kashayas

Sramana Bhagwan Mahavir has shown three methods of controlling the Kashayas.
  1. Upasamana (Subsidence)
  2. Ksayopasama (Destruction cum-subsidence)
  3. Ksayikarana (Destruction)
The excitement should be so suppressed, crushed, and destroyed that it would not arise again. This ‘upasamana’ is the method of suppression: to suppress partly and to destroy partly. To suppress and destroy simultaneously is called ‘Kasayopasama’. In simple terms the path of the Kashaya should be changed, e.g. anger should be conquered by pardon. Thus one should be liberal. This is the method of change of course.

To make the Kashayas completely weak, to destroy them, to dissolve them till they are completely wiped away is called (Kasayikarana) or destruction. This is the method of dissolving or ‘destroying’.
