Vision:

For any bright, hard-working, goal-oriented, practicing Jain youth in North America to be able to afford to attend an institution of higher learning where s/he can develop her/his skills and talents, and eventually make the community, country and world a better place.

Mission:

To attract, identify, and provide meaningful and substantial financial aid to practicing Jain youths in North America who wish to embark on a college career path and have a demonstrated financial need.

Award Guidelines:

Please read the following very carefully. Failure to comply with the rules could result in disqualification.

The JAINA Academic Scholarship program (JASP) will provide educational scholarships to high school seniors going into college who wish to pursue higher learning in the fields of arts, science, engineering and literature . At this time JAINA will not provide fellowships or loans. The scholarship award will be known as the need-based JAINA Academic Scholarship Award(JASP).
Initially, JAINA intends to provide ten (10) academic scholarships every year toward higher learning in the fields of science, engineering, arts or literature. Over a period of time JASP intends to expand the scholarships to up to twenty (20) awarded each year.
Individual scholarship awards shall be $1500 per student.
 
How to Apply

Applications are available at your local Jain center/society or online. Please fill out the application, complete the written essay, and return all documentation to the address provided on the application form. Applications must be postmarked by May 31, 2015. Applicants must submit the application along with a high school transcript, letters of recommendation, and an acceptance letter from an accredited institution of higher learning which must be a non-profit educational institution. Submission of applications online with the necessary attachments is highly encouraged.

A. Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must:
  1. Be a practicing Jain, which includes vegetarianism
  2. Demonstrate financial need (based on current FAFSA on file at the choice of Student College /University)
  3. Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  4. Be accepted to an accredited college/university in a degree program, in North America, for the fall 2014 term.
  5. Provide one academic reference letter
  6. Provide one personal reference letter
  7. Write a statement of purpose: an essay of 500 words explaining how the intended field of education will relate to personal, professional, academic, and/or spiritual goals. Applicant must also separately explain why they should be the one selected for this award.
  8. Must obtain a letter of recommendation from JAINA directors from your local Jain center. (If a student is having difficulty locating or contacting their local JAINA director, they should contact their local center president.)
Additionally, applications may be considered for students from India or elsewhere if s/he is enrolled in a US university as a full-time student during the 2015-16 school year (excluding summer session). Other extenuating circumstances may be considered. These must be explained and documented in an attachment.
Note: Applicants selected for the JASP award will be requested to provide a current picture for publication in JAINA publications. Providing a picture is voluntary and is not a requirement for distribution of scholarship funds.


B. Number of awards:
Initially ten (10) scholarships will be awarded annually. Future plans include expanding the scholarship awards to twenty (20) each year.


C. Selection of Awardees:
Based on the eligibility requirements as stated above, the JAINA Academic Scholarship Committee with evaluate all the complete applications and make a decision on the recipients of this award. In the final selection process, JASP reserves the option to interview the student and their parent(s). JASP scholarship is need - as well as merit-based, therefore all applicants who meet both of these criteria will have an equal chance to compete. The JAINA Academic Scholarship Award Committee will be the selection committee and their decision will be final.
The names of ALL scholarship winners will be announced by June 30, 2015.


D. Scholarship Renewal:
Those who receive scholarships during an academic year may apply again in another year. However, such applicants will be considered along with all others who apply. If for any reason, any recipient relinquishes a scholarship, that scholarship will be granted to an alternate deserving student who has met all eligibility requirements.


E. Supervising and follow-up of the Scholarship Award:
JASP will require the recipient to demonstrate proof of school enrollment and the curriculum prior to issuing the scholarship. The student must be pursuing higher education in the subjects listed elsewhere in this document.

The JAINA Academic Scholarship Award will assist with tuition, books, supplies, housing and other needs for the student. During the school year, we may require other criteria, such as review of transcripts and recommendation letters to determine the success of our recipients and the results of our scholarship(s). The scholarship award may also be distributed in allotments during the school year rather than a lump sum.


F. Application Process:
Applicant must submit the following items:
  • Completed JASP scholarship application form.
  • A 500-words personal essay, describing your academic and career goals and why you should be selected for this award
  • Certified copy of your high school/college transcript.
  • Reference letters as described above.
  • Letter of recommendation as described above.
  • Participate in a telephone interview (if selected from qualifying applications).
  • Certified copy of FAFSA application.
  • Provide Common Application Form (for Undergraduate College Admission, if available)
  • Provide list of activities you participated in at your Jain Center.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: JASP scholarship funds are intended to assist students with the cost of tuition, books and fees. Funds can be used for housing or any other incurred expenses. Funds must be used during the regular school year and cannot be used for summer courses. If tuition is paid in full by any other scholarship, grant or other financial aid the JASP scholarship may be used for other educational expenses. JASP reserves the rights to change scholarship rules and regulations without notice.
