"Young Jains of America will aspire to impart the Jain heritage to the next generation."
-The First YJA Convention: Chicago, IL 1994

About YJA:

Young Jains of America (YJA) is an organization under the Federation of Jain Associations in North America (JAINA), who puts emphasis on projects relating to Jain youth from ages 14-29.

Serving over 10,000 members, YJA's mission is to be recognized nationally and internationally as an umbrella youth organization for establishing a network to share Jain heritage and religion.

YJA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, parented by the Federation of Jain Associations in North America (JAINA).

YJA's Objectives:
  • To raise awareness about Jain ideals and principles in North America and the world
  • To create a forum for sharing Jain religion
  • To instill a sense of pride among Jain youth about their heritage
  • To address the problems, difficulties, and concerns facing Jain youth
  • To assist and to promote charitable community activities
  • To prepare Jain youth to become successful Jain leaders of tomorrow
  • To develop friendships among young Jains
  • To foster and strengthen local Jain youth groups

YJA Executive Board:

The YJA Executive Board compromises of sixteen Jain youth from across Northern America: two Co-Chairs, eight Director positions, and six Regional Coordinators, between the ages of 18 and 29.

You can read about our current Executive Board here. The positions are as follows:

In addition, we are looking for Local Representatives (LRs) to assist Regional Coordinators (RCs) with activities in their local temples. An LR is not an Executive Board position but serves as a great way to stay involved with YJA and as a stepping stone toward a future Executive Board position.

A new YJA Executive Board is elected every year. The Executive Board provides a forum to make wonderful friendships and build networking opportunities. The experience of serving on the YJA board will help you in whatever career you pursue. You will learn to work within short deadlines, communicate with others, develop projects with limited resources, and much more. But, the most important thing is that YJA is a great way to give back to our community that has given us so much.

For more information on elections, please visit our Elections page or e-mail us at info@yja.org.

THE FUTURE OF YJA:

Since the last three JAINA conventions, communication has increased amongst the youth from different regions. The youth are eager to move beyond the parochial interests that plague some of the first generation Jains. They are eager to see how religion can play a greater role in their lives. We urge all the Jain organizations to forward the names of local youth to us and encourage youth proactively within their own communities. All the youth and youth leaders may contact any Executive Board member if they have any ideas, comments, and concerns that they would like to share.
