Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre
School of Oriental and African Studies,
Russell Square, London WC1H OXG
The next Jaina Studies Workshop explores the various notions of yoga and their developments as found in the textual traditions of Jainism as well as in contemporary Jaina practice. The Jaina concept of yoga reflects the intertwined relationship with India's broad tradition of Yoga as well as Jaina innovations related to the theory and practice of yoga.
Contributions are invited on Jaina Yoga.
Prof. Chris Chapple is organizing a seminar /conference on relationship between Yoga and Jainism at University of London (SOAS). In 1998, Prof. Chapple organized a 3 day international Conference at Harvard on Jainism and Ecology which later on appeared into a comprehensive book form.
Prof. Chapple is a champion of Jain studies and as a result about 7 of his students have attended International Summer School for jain Academic Studies in India.
To organize this seminar at prestigious SOAS (university of London School of Oriental and African Studies at London), Prof. Chapple is looking for about $6000 ( Six thousand USD) funding. This is a great opportunity for the Jain community to support such initiatives.
We would be grateful if you will consider pledging only $500 each for this cause. All the donations are tax deductible
Invitation from the organizer follows:
Dear Friend of the Study of Jainism:
In December of 2006, a major conference was held at the India International Centre on the relationship between Yoga and Jainism, with a focus on the presence of Yoga philosophy and practice in various Jaina traditions. Several papers were presented, mostly in Hindi, on this fascinating topic.
This March, the annual Jaina seminar will revisit this topic, with many prominent Jaina scholars contributing new research on this topic. Sagarmal Jain from India will present the keynote address. Confirmed scholars include Jeffrey Long on Yasovijaya and Yoga, Olle Quarnstrom on Hemacandra and Yoga, John Cort on 18th and 19th century expressions of Jaina Yoga in India, Smita Kothari (PhD candidate, U Toronto) on Therapanthi Jaina Yoga, Andrea Jain (PhD candidate, Rice University) on Preksha Yoga and others. The latter two presenters have benefited from their participation in the International Summer School for Jain Studies, where they have collected significant material and made important research contacts.
Co-sponsors for this event include the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London (the host), Lund University in Sweden, Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and the International Summer School for Jain Studies. Additional funds are being sought to help with the expenses for this international event. We hope that you can help support this important field of study.
Thank you for your attention.
