3. LIFE STORY : ACHARYA DR.LOKESH MUNI JI

Acharya Dr. Lokesh Muni Ji was born on April 17th 1961 he renounced his worldly life at the young age of twenty-two and studied Jain, Budhist and Vedic philosophy. Acharya Ji is a versatile thinker, creative writer, poet, social reformer and an excellent orator. He has travelled in India and Abroad to promote Peace, Harmony and Non Violence. In order to give practical shape to these values he founded ‘Ahimsa Vishwa Bharti’ and thus made his field of activities spreading throughout the world. He is an author of more than dozen books both in prose and poetry.

STORY #7 : BHARAT STORY

In the earlier story we heard how Bahubali achieved enlightenment. What became of Bharat?

Bharat became the undisputed emperor, or Chakravarti, of all of India. His rule was so expansive that another name for India actually became Bharat. He ruled equitably and in the interest of all. People were happy. He was happy in every respect too.

Years passed. One day, a ring rolled off of his finger while he was in his dressing room. He noticed that his finger looked rather odd without the ring. Out of curiosity he took off all of his other rings and noticed that his hands looked odd without any adornment. He then took off his crown and other jewelry from his ears, neck and arms. He looked in the mirror and noticed that he did not look impressive.

This set in motion a train of thought. ‘I consider myself handsome and impressive, but all of that impressiveness is merely from the ornaments I wear. The body is just flesh and blood. It will grow old and wrinkled and one day I will have to let go of my body, just as I let go of my ornaments.”He realized that nothing in the world, including his own body, really belonged to him. In that case, he thought, ‘Why not do away with my attachment to alltemporary things and instead focus on something that lasts forever, like my father did? His mind detached itself from worldly life. This led to true enlightenment from within.

STORY #8 : MARUDEVI STORY

Marudevi is best known as the mother of Adinath, the first Jina. Like other mothers of Jinas, Marudevi experienced the auspicious dreams that herald the birth of a Jina. You can learn more about these dreams in more accounts of Marudevi's life.

According to Svetambara accounts, Marudevi rides an elephant to hear the sermon being given by some newly enlightened teacher. When she arrives she sees the holy man is her son, Adinath. Marudevi looks down from her elephant and sees the splendor of the universal assembly of a universal ruler. When she realizes the universal ruler is her own son, she attains omniscience and then dies, achieving liberation.

5. KARMA THEORY

Karmas are of innumerable types. Lord Umaswati in Tattwarthasutra mentions 97 types in all. Some others specify 148 types. All of them can however be broadly classified into 8 categories as detailed below. Of these the first four are called Ghatiya in the sense that they tend to defile the real nature of soul; they do not allow its true properties to be manifested. The remaining four are called Aghatiya. Though the soul has to bear their consequences, the operation of these Karmas does not come in the way of manifestation of its true properties.

1) Jnanavaraniya or Knowledge Obscuring Karma

Soul has infinite capacity of knowing anything and everything. We however do not realize this capacity because the knowing property of the soul is obscured by the operation of this Karma. It does not actually reduce its inherent capacity of knowing, but it's operation remains restricted as the impact of sunlight gets limited when the sky is clouded. Similarly, the operation of this Karma hampers the manifestation of soul’s know ability. This type of Karma is acquired mainly by disregard of preceptors and of the sources of knowledge. Matijnan, Shrutjnan, Avadhijnan, Manahparyayjnan and Kewaljnan are the five divisions of Jnana. Therefore this obscuring Karma is also subdivided into those respective five subdivisions.

2) Darshanavaraniya or Perception Obscuring Karma Perceiving property of soul gets obscured by the operation of this Karma. This also does not reduce soul’s inherent capacity of perceiving, but restricts its manifestation. This Karma is acquired on account of absence of conviction and loss of faith in the tenets of truth. Chakshudarshan, Achakshudarshan, Avadhidarshan and Kewaldarshan are the four divisions of Darshan. Therefore, this obscuring Karma too is subdivided into those respective four subdivisions.

B. JAIN SOCIETY OF METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON

JSMW looks forward to your presence at the Khanan Vidhi program this weekend under the guidance of Narendrabhai Nandu. The program starts on Friday night at 8pm with Bhavna at the Jain Center,1021 Briggs Chaney Road, Silver Spring, MD 20905.

We continue with our events on Saturday at Paint Branch High School, 14121 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville, MD 20866 with lunch from 11:30-12:15pm sharp to allow our 24 Tirthankar Poojan to begin promptly at 12:39pm followed by Swamivatsalya dinner. During the course of the 24 Tirthankar Poojan, the ghee bolis will be taken for the main Khanan Vidhi events.

Finally, on Sunday morning the Khanan Vidhi program begins at 7:45am sharp. All participants should park at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir at 4320 Ammendale Rd, Beltsville, MD 20705. For the physically disabled, there will be a shuttle available to the site from 7:30am to 9am. All others will be walking under the guidance of police officers. The event will be followed by Swamivatsalya Lunch in the Dining Hall of the BAPS Mandir.

7. TAP - DHYAN

Dhyan is fifth abhyantar tap.Dhyan means concentration of thought.

Dhyan means concentration of thought. This concentration could arise from intense passions like attachment, lust, or animosity or from the search for the truth and from absolute detachment towards worldly affairs.

Dhyan is divided into four categories:
i) Arta dhyan,
ii) Roudra dhyan,
iii) Dharma dhyan,
iv) Shukla dhyan.

Arta dyan means focusing our energy to attain the material thing. In arta dhyan a person reflects on the
i) loss of dear ones (Ishta Viyog),
ii) development of a new relationship with an undesirable or unpleasant person (Anishta Samyog),
iii) physical illness (Roga chinta) and
iv) future planning (Agrasocha or Nidanartha).

Roudra dhyan means focusing our energy to protect the object. In roudra dhyan one is absorbed in taking total revenge for some damage or loss caused by others.

There are four types: i) Hisanubahndhi, ii) Mrishanubadhi, iii) Steynubandhi, and IV) Samrakshanubandhi.

Both arta and roudra dhyan lead to accumulation of bad karmas and therefore art and roudra dhyan should be avoided. Dharma dhyan means reflecting on the ways and means towards realization of self. Shukla dhyan means reflecting on the purity of the soul.

Dharma dhyan and shukla dhyan lead to the removal of karmas. Therefore,for the purpose of nirjara we shall contemplate on dharma dhyan and shukla dhyan. If contemplation on dharma dhyan is at the highest level then we can completely destroy Mohniya karma and within 48 minutes of the destruction of Mohaniya Karma, Jnanavarniya, Darshanavarniya and Antaray Karmas are also destroyed

YJA, YJS and YJUK Walk-A-Thon

YJA, along with Young Jains Singapore, and Young Jains United Kingdom, raised over $1,400 through the Walk-A-Thon to donate to Akshaya Patra. Participants walked or ran over 800 miles, and we will be supporting children's education by providing 93 kids one mid-day tasty meal for every school day for an ENTIRE year!

College Chapter Spotlight

Columbia Ahimsa co-hosted Vegebration, a dinner celebration to bring students together and raise awareness around the benefits of vegan and vegetarian diets. They partnered with the Columbia Hindu Students Organization and Vegan Society to create an event that was informative and fun for all! 10. VEGAN RECIPE

Dal Makhani/Blackgrams and Kidney Beans in Creamy Gravy

For the Lentils:

1) 1 Cup dried whole black gram (Urad whole) or use black lentils
2) 13 Cup dried kidney beans
3) 3-4 Cups water (Use less water if using lentils)
4) salt to taste

For the Tempering:

1) 2 Tablespoon oil
2) 1 Teaspoon cumin seeds
3) 2-3 Green chilies finely chopped
4) 18 Teaspoon asafoetida(hing)
5) 12 Teaspoon turmeric powder
6) 12 Teaspoon red chili powder
7) 1.5 Cups chopped tomatoes (2 medium)
8) 1 Teaspoon garam masala (regular or punjabigaram masala)
9) 1 Tablespoon dried fenugreek leaves(Kasoorimethi, or Use a 12 teaspoon fenugreek/methi seeds)-Optional
10) 14 Cup cashew milk or almond milk
11) Vegan butter and cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

1. Soak the lentils overnight or at least for 5 hours. Along with salt and water, pressure cook for 4-5 whistles.
2. Heat oil in a skillet at medium heat. Crackle cumin seeds, add green chilies, asafoetida, tomatoes, turmeric, read chili powder and salt. Cook for 7 to 8 minutes or until it leaves oil.
3. Now addcooked lentils and beans to it and let it simmer for 30 minutes on low heat. Mash some of the lentils with the spatula. Addgaram masala powder, crushed fenugreek leaves and the milk. Check salt and adjust to taste.
4. Garnish with vegan butter and cilantro. Serve with Roti, Naan or Rice.
